Default Half Shaft High Temperatures!

I do all of my own powder coating, and I spent ALL DAY prepping my half shafts to get coated to go on the chassis. Media blasting, cleaning, honing the bores, etc.

Anyway, all parts I "pre-bake" at about 425 degrees F to bake off any oil or grease left after wiping down with acetone and to out gas the metal. Usually for about 20 min. once the part is up to temperature. This is common practice with powder coating. ...I forgot they were down in the oven and they sat at those temperatures for around 2 hours

What do you think about their integrity now?

The temperature was too cool to have any reaction in the metal.

Hardened parts might be tempered slightly by that temperature....but I don't think there is any hardening performed on the half-shafts or the yoke pieces. Should not be a problem.

I agree with 7T1vette, the only part of the shafts that were probably heat-treated are the yokes. If it did anything it stressed relieved them and did not lower the rockwell reading ( scale of hardness). Frank.

Yokes weren't heat treated [for hardness]....only for tempering to relieve casting stresses.

A tad more info

http://www.technologystudent.com/equip1/heat1.htm

These low temps only temper steel. Like stated earlier. Stress relief based on level of heat. Not major molecular changes. Also, as stated by bmprhmpr rockwell number should have remained constant even after heating. Hammer on!

Toss 'em in the trash. After two hours at 425, they'll be as tough as whit leather and you won't be able to chew them.
