points ignition question
on my 74, I have the old points style distributor and external coil setup.
Its been a while since I took it all apart, and I am trying to figure this one out. on the side of the coil mounting bracket , there is a condenser that attaches to one of the coil terminals. Does it connect to the positive or the negative side ? its been twenty five years since I worked on this type of ignition system , and I am struggling to remember anything about it, info from you guys is appreciated greatly.

All of the 'radio noise suppressor' capacitors are wired from the positive (12vdc) side of that component to ground. That capacitor is just used to absorb voltage "spikes" due to switching noise, alternator whine, brake light apply, ignition buzz, etc. The DC voltage will NOT be affected....just the noises will be filtered out.
These 'filters' prevent the DC power signal going to the radio from putting noises into the radio output. If you have installed an aftermarket radio within the last 20 years, these capacitors are probably unnecessary, as more modern radios have such filters built into them.

the capacitor that is in the coil circuit is not for noise reduction. it's purpose is to balance the inductance of the coil windings so that the magnetic field of the coil builds and collapses more quickly as the points open and close.

I believe you are speaking of the condensor beside the points.
