Default New Tach board fail

I recently installed a new circuit board for my tach from Wilcox along with the filter and It didn't last 500 miles. What causes the spike in voltage and how to stop it. I just ordered another board and filter.

If you think it was destroyed by a voltage spike then your alternator voltage regulator is the likely culprit.

I'm not sure if it was destroyed by voltage. I'm guessing because it's a circuit board

Default Check the quality of the solder joints

I'd check the quality of all of the solder joints on the board. I first bought a replacement board for my 75-77 housing as I was converting my '71 mechanical to electric.

I bought the board from Willcox but could clearly see that it was defective even before I put it in. Check out the 2nd and the 3rd from the top right in that line near the word "Common" and you can see the issue:

I contacted Willcox and they promptly sent out a replacement.

Wow, that's amazing. I cant believe they let that out the door. I have to check mine when I pull it. It was working fine.. then nada.

I will check the new one before it goes in.

Malicastasr-

We have very few problems with the tach boards, but accidents do happen.

Stingrays board as do all our boards, must pass two test before they are put on the shelf for sale. The last test is a function test emulating an installation.

If you would like to send the original board back to me I'll be more than happy to check it for you... if it's defective I'll refund you the other board. If it's not I'll tell try to tell you what went wrong.

You still gotta figure out what is spiking the voltage if indeed it is and the spike is taking out the board.

I am assuming its an 82 but the later C3s had a inline fuse to protect the board from spikes...it may have started in 1978. You may want to check that out as well

Fuse or are you talking about the tach filter on the intake?
