Well tomorrow is the big day. I have owned 4 Vettes 84, 96, 97 and an 08. In about 14hrs if it doesn't rain I will driving home my 1971 454 Ontario Orange Corvette. It has the original motor, auto trans, pw, original leather interior, A/C that still works as does most everything on he car. What should I expect when it comes to up keep? I plan to drive it to a few cruise-ins and an occasional show.
Thanks for any input.
Mi mf,
WELL!!! A 71, bb, a/c!!! NICE!!!
This will be quite a different car than those you've had.
Saying just what upkeep it might need as you enjoy it isn't really possible until you drive it some and can determine just what you've bought.
Once your heart has stopped pounding I hope you can take some pictures so we can check it out too!
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
as for the OP its the same types of things as the C5 without the added aggravation of the computer, but the added new aggravation of vacuum and mechanical.
The primary maintenance on my '77 (also orange) is to regularly check and top off the fluids because it tends to leak. It's also all original. Also replaced the tires and all the weather stripping in addition to checking the brakes and having the seatbelts re-webbed. A lot of the standard stuff that wears out. Finally, I took it to a good classic Corvette place for a free, full inspection. Still have the list of all their recommendations that I'm gradually working my way through.
IMHO, C3's have the best styling and are the most fun to drive and get the most looks and thumbs up!
What to expect on upkeep? Depends on how much is original and how much was restored. If everything was restored, you might have mostly a new car. But since these are 40 year old+/- cars, you have to accept that you will be working on them from time to time with all manner of surprises. Suggest you buy an Assembly Instruction Manual (amazing how much good info is there) and an original GM factory service manual. Also, check this forum frequently, a great place to learn and share!
Enjoy!
