Actually, I think in '78 you got an AM/FM radio included in the base price. If you didn't want it, you could order a "radio delete" option that got you a few dollars back.
Lots of folks did this, as the car companies were putting puny/weak radios in the cars as "standard equipment" and charging ridiculous money for an 'upgrade' to a decent unit; but anyone could buy a much better headunit/speakers at the local auto store for small buck$. The car manufacturers finally got wise and started installing much better quality radios in the 1980's...due in no small part to the Japanese cars having much better stereo systems included in their "base price".
