Modernizing a 79 interior

What I am trying to say is that arbitrary and tasteful don't always go in pair, what looks good to one is not always what looks good to others, that's not a problem, problem starts when what looks good to one doesn't look good to 99% of the society. That would be the last post from me on the silver leather subject.

Tasteful, tacky, hideous, is all in the eyes of the beer holder!
Moving on with the topic however, I have wood trim (fake wood?) and a real wood steering wheel. I plan to keep the wheel, however, I'd like to change the trip, around the ashtray, and shifter, ect. That stuff. What do you think of painting that body color? Or maybe carbon fiber?

Your initial post didn't say anything about tasteful, and I wasn't commenting on whether your opinion was if it was tasteful or not. You said a surface like a door panel should not be painted silver because it was soft and padded, not because it wasn't tasteful. Why would a surface's being soft and padded have any bearing on whether or not it should be silver? That's what I don't get about your comment.
Carbon pieces are related to track/race cars (and rather modern ones)
wood interior is related to grand tourers
grand tourers/GT/gran turismo are luxury, long distance, high speed sports cars (two seaters or 2+2 like Porsche 928)
While you could go with your car either way, race or GT, I would stay away from mixing both...
here is an idea, you have real wood steering wheel? how about making the center console out of veneer? if the steering wheel is real wood you can sand it and re stain it so both are the same color, mahogany gloss for example.
Another related idea, how do you like your ignition key and the long lever behind it? (I'm not to happy with the engineering that went into it) how about moving it to the new center console (that was done factory OEM on some 60ties sports cars) you could have a nice key in there with a "start" button next to it...
power (key switch)
ignition (toggle momentary or push momentary)
you can add electric cooling fan bypass switch there as well if you'll change the fan some day... or electric fuel pump "on"...
not sure if you like it or not, just something that popped into my mind right now...
to think of it, wood and brushed stainless steel was used back in the day so you could go wood steering wheel, wood shift **** and SS center panel if that suits you better
Since you plan on new gauges, the bezel that's covering them in the upper center console could be matched with the ashtray console...

Who knows, the wood already matches the wheel, so maybe I will just keep it, who knows.
I do, however, REALLY like the idea of a push start ignition... I shall have to think more on this.
And I really like the idea matching the center console to the gauge surrounds sounds like a great idea. Maybe a brushed aluminum? I have a full engineering shop at work and quite possibly will be able to CNC something in just a few more months.
LOL, smart man!

Really a well done car all around. Shame what happened.
