I have just learned that SEM self etch primer is not compatible with most other primers and paints!
I have a bunch of large parts that I sprayed with self etch, and planed to spray epoxy primer on as the last coat. No need for a finish coat.
Contacted SEM Tech and they offer no product to go over self etch!
Would sanding back to bare metal, be enough to use just the epoxy primer? or anyone have a better suggestion?
The parts are big and have lots of contours, do want to sand down again if not totally necessary?
What do you guys do from Bare to seal, while working on the area(s)
Its to large of area to fix, sand and prime all at once, and not leave exposed repaired metal.
Because you can't apply paint or other primer over self etch!
I have all ready applied the self etch, and need a way to seal it with out reaction from the self etch.
This is right from the SEM website:
SELF ETCHING PRIMER adheres to steel, aluminum and stainless steel, for overall refinishing or spot repairs. Formulated for use under primer surfacers and with most paint systems.

I self etched my 53 and top coated with epoxy and then paint.
That was 3 yrs ago I just sanded it with 400 and shot the epoxy
I have used the sem self etch on small parts after blasting to bare metal. I've used both an epoxy paint sprayed with a gun and rattle can top coats. No issues yet. The finish with the epoxy paint top coat turned out really nice.
What issues did the tech rep say would occur? And why exactly would they make a self etching primer if nothing is compatible?

They where concerned with reaction to the phosphoric acid, causing the next layer to peel
I went to Crown Auto Body Supply, where I buy my paint. I was told to use what ever I want, they also gave me the same senario, but they have used the product in the same manner!
So epoxy primer it is.... Thanks All
