Default 68 Tail Lights

Why do some 1968's have 4 red rear lights and some have the white centers on the inner ones?

68 only- 4 tail lites, back up lamps mounted in lower valance. if you notice outer 69 tail lamps are dated 68 and the inners have b/u lites dated 69, only 1 tail lite per side.

Some owners of '68 cars liked the later arrangement better; so they swapped parts/wiring over to the '69 & after configuration.

Believe me, you can't see anything with those '68 backup lights being below the bumpers and aimed down.

But there seems to be many more non-68s that have been converted to the 68 only four taillight setup than 68s switching to the 69 up.

Thanks, I thought I had uncovered all the 1968 quirks but the Reverse light set up got past me!

I would much rather have four tail lights when I put on the brakes...Lou.

Yep...if it has white centers it's a conversion. Both my 68's still have em in the lower valance. It was a 1 year only 68 thing. Kind of like the other hundred 68 only things that drive me nuts trying to find.

That's good to know. Mine have never worked, so fixing them just became a lower priority!

The truth is that GM management required them to cheapen the car every year after launching the 1968. I read this in an article in a car magazine years ago. Why else did they drop the 68 only coupe interior rear sail panel lights? This guy, in upper management, stated that GM threw a ton of money at them to launch the car, but they had to cheapen it every year after that to satisfy the bean counters. Lou.

I`m also planning to go with 4 tail lights. I REALLY like what 7T2Vette did for reverse lights, using a strip of white LED lights on the license plate frame. Here`s a pic he posted of it a while back....

I think functionality would be better with the backup lights in the middle of the inner taillights, and a 3rd brake light bar at the top of the license plate. That would be easily connected; and you can still see when backing up.

All 68s had four red tail lights. Anything else is not stock. All 69 and later cars have the backup lamps in the inner pair of lights.

If ya look at enough 68 vettes, you will notice many of them have 69 parts, because many of the 68 parts are impossible to find. Common things are the non map pocket dash side, steering wheel, center gage cluster / shift plate door panels, & most common 69 part I think thats found in a 68 is the "INCORRECT" 69 center armrest / e-brake / console !!
