Does anyone have any tips on re-wiring my 71 stingray convertible, under dash and engine compartment. I purchased the wiring harness and I am planning on doing it over the winter. I am going to remove the interior and start there. Any advice from anyone who has done this sort of thing would be helpful....I know the center console is a real tough install, I already had that out once...not looking forward to that again...
Remember: the main dash harness fuse box passes through the firewall and is the connection for the forward lamp and engine harness under the hood. Remove the bolt and unplug forward lamp and engine before tugging on the dash harness.
take lots of pictures! especially about the harness path near the steering wheel. also, check and note the color coding to the switches and gauges. there are some errors made in the production of the harness. i had a harness with reversed wires on a plug for the fuel gauge that drove me nuts until i noticed that the two wires were crossed.
Is doing this re-wiring a very difficult job? I doubt the under hood is very hard but I think the dash will be tough...
Thanks, I will take your advice!!
Order the assembly instruction manual (AIM) before you jump in. The AIM shows the harness, the installation, the routing, and where everything plugs up.
I just did my '71 coupe this past winter. Have patience and be ready to find missing parts.
For the firewall connection, if you have power brakes the easy way is to remove all the wires under hood up to the firewall, then unscrew the fuse box and pull enough of the harness inside the car till you can unscrew the connectors from the fuse box. This will save a lot of hassle as trying to get at the bolt otherwise is a pain.
Other then that, with an AIM in hand it is all fairly simple. Also removing the entire dash does make a difference.
