What would you consider the better 327 a large journal crank or a small journal. I have heard that folks like Smokey Yunick and Bill Jenkins swore by the small journal engines. I was just wondering because I have a small journal 327 on a stand in the back of the shop and I might want to build a little screamer one day.
The 2 inch rod journals lighten it a bit. Large end of the rod will be lighter, as will the journal itself. Pick up a 283 crank, and make a 302 or so little screamer. Remember you/ll have to keep the Rs up to make it run well.
I checked the crank casting today and its a forged small journal. It doesn't have the good heads though. But I have a pair of camel hump heads on the shelf I will just have to rebuild them.

Facctory 'camel hump' heads are OK...but nothing compared to some modern aluminum heads and matching roller [or flat tappet] cam. If you want to build it with 'vintage' parts, fine. Otherwise, make it "better".
Not this one it was totaled and had been sitting in a friends salvage yard for years, no glass, shot full of holes and rotted out. I got the engine and the old 3 speed and the rest went to the scrap yard.

I`m gonna put it in my 66 El Camino SS it isn`t gonna be a hot rod just a nice cruiser so I am going to use what I have here on the shelf. Most likely a Comp Cams X4250H it`s a mild hydraulic lifter cam. I have an Edelbrock performer and a 600 Holly here and I am going to even use the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds and I am even keeping the powerglide.
