About 4 years ago I got a carpet set from Al Knock for my 68 roadster. Im ready to install it and I don't know how! I don't know where the pieces should start and end and I am afraid of trimming too much. And no, I don't have the old carpet for reference. Does anyone know of a resource for this? I looked for a thread but so far have come up empty.
I just finished installing a carpet set in my "68 Coupe. Should be similar for roadster. Start with the pieces that fit over the rear wheels. Remember to trim the pieces to fit, but do so very slowly. After the final dry fit, then glue them. Next, I did the rear deck. Then I fit the riser piece behind the seats. I trimmed all four of these to fit under the compartment door frame. Make sure you mount the glove box to the frame first. Don't trim the bottom of the riser piece until after installing the floor carpets. Also dry fit the brake console before final trimming of the floor carpets or riser. Compartment doors can be done at any time. Took me about six hours. Good luck.
Hi AW,
Installing the carpet is time consuming to do well.
I believe a good sequence is the 2 wheel wells first, then the bulkhead behind the seats, and then the compartment floor and rear bulkhead piece.
The edge of the seat bulkhead piece and the front edge of the compartment floor piece are both held in place by the frame for the 3 storage compartment doors.
The front 2 pieces are easier but can be tricky. Make sure the carpet is far enough forward so that it extends far enough up the foot wells for the rubber plugs to pass through the carpet to hold it in place.
The most important thing is to trim VERY GRADUALLY. The worst thing you can do is to cut too much off some place. Fit, measure, cut; fit, measure, cut; over and over.
I literally had hundreds of tiny cut pieces on the garage floor when I was finished. For me, more than a day or two's work.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
There are some threads about carpet installation, some with pictures.

Also, the back wall of the storage compartment AND the front carpet pieces for the footwells have rubber plugs which are used to keep those carpet pieces held in place. Many folks try to glue these pieces; but most end up having them fall down within a short time. The aftermarket places that sell carpeting also sell these rubber plugs. Buy 9 of them....you'll need them.
P.S. If you glue the carpeting in place with something "permanent" (ie, Liquid Nails construction adhesive ), the next person to replace carpeting in your car will come back to haunt you!!!
One trick I used was to pick up a cheap solder gun and use it to make the bolt holes for seat belts etc. Creates a nice even hole, and it melts the edges slightly which keeps the carpet from fraying. Once the carpet is in place, use a small scribe to locate the hole in the floorboard, and then use the soldering iron to create the hole.
