Thanks for the well documented approach. I will absolutely be using this as a reference when I get to the bodywork stage of my project.
Hope the back is feeling better!
I'm just now getting out to the auto store for some fiberglass mat to fix my mistake on the door "tab"....Dub alerted me that the cloth pattern could show through after painting....may as well fix it now.
I covered the door tabs with fiberglass mat....it took 5 layers to keep the cloth from showing through. I also used a 3/16" drill (bit) to size the gap and allow for body work/paint.......................
I will shape the tab once the deck lid is repaired.............
Finishing the gap......................
The camera distorts the gap in contours......................
The drill (bit) does not lie.............................
The paint store sells these coveralls and they are made of a material that is as thin and lite as paper but stronger !
They are reusable and cheap !
They also have what they call a spray sock that goes over your head and keeps stuff everything but your eyes!
The other trick to fiberglass work is to not rub it into your skin , turn the shower on as hot as you can stand, get in don't rub but let your pores open then turn the water on cold !
Let the cold water close your pores while your screaming () then shower like normal!
It won't remove it all but you won't feel like you did !
SPCL......I always do the shower trick. I have the lightweight zip-up coveralls w/hood also. The problem is I am so allergic to the stuff that opening the garage door (stirring up fine dust) just to walk in check on things causes me to itch for hours. The super lightweight rain jacket helps a lot/breathing mask/goggles/gloves/taped wrists. I use a 2 ft. long air nozzle to blow the car/ceiling walls off.

on me.
I'll have to get you a pic of the setup I'm talking about but it sounds like you got it covered!
I believe that your playing my theme song though....
🎼 If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all ~ gloom , dispare, and agony on me!

LOL! I did spend most of the day finishing the siding on the first of three walls on the addition to the garage.....wavy as can be from the bowed wall studs...Oh well.
Tomorrow I will clean up my mess around the rear of the car since I literally cannot see it any more.
I will be starting on the deck opening and the deck lid Monday where the previous owner fiberglassed it permanently closed (I had to cut it out with a 4" cut-off wheel/didn't go well ................................
Anyhow, my parts came in 5 days early/just in time for the repair.........

I spent the day in the garage clearing a path around the car. Later I took these pics of my next repair project................
BRACE YOURSELF....this is the area of the deck where the previous owner fiberglassed the deck lid to the body....as you can see I did NOT trace a pattern of the lid onto the deck which would have prevented me from going into the body lip around the opening .........
Driver-side along quarter panel................................... .....
Passenger-side along quarter panel................................... ....
This should be fun.............................
EDIT: Can someone post a few pics of the recessed area where the rubber gasket seats into the deck? Also....can you tell me the radius size (example: 1/4"...5/16"...3/8"...etc.)where the recess meets the top pf the deck?

And speaking of assembling things before paint. In one thread a guy put a nose on his car. Then he put the bumper on and the bumper was about a half-inch out in front of the nose. And he had to cut and adapt every single one of his bumper brackets. Might be an idea when doing the nose alterations on yours, to hang the bumper ahead of time and see where everything goes. Maybe even scare up a straight used bumper so that you're not mounting and dismounting your new one constantly and putting it at risk.

Good idea. Hopefully the bumper will be 1/2" too close to the body which would make up for the 3/4" gap at the doors/fenders.....LOL
Of course I DO have plenty of adjustment.........(notice the nice P.O. angle iron bracket and the 1/2" thick fiberglass at the bottom of the fender).......
Those fiberglass reinforcements you sent me that fit behind the bumper practically snap into place.....a little more sanding and they will be flush.........
Well....out to the garage to add some siding to the addition........and grind some doo-doo out of the deck lid recess.

Just don't be flinging any of that do do around !
You don't want ta get any of that on those pretty pink studs !
That P.O. must have gone thru bubba class 101 about three times to get to the level that he was on !
Looks like your getting it back in shape and for you know it it'll be time for paint and road trips!
