Doorgunner's '68 Convertible Project

What you need do to have a nice carpeted tool box like that is..........get PTSD/V.A. meds/Spring allergies/2 bottles of cough-cold-flu- medicine/lay upside down in the Vette for 2 days.....
and THERE'S your tool box!
I'll try to install the gauge cluster/right dash panel/center console tomorrow (Yeah....RIGHT!)

Doorgunner, I've been following your thread since nearly the beginning and I've never posted on it until now. I have to say, your build thread is the most unique one out there. To me (also a Corvette rookie) it has been motivation to successfully complete many repairs that I was completely unfamiliar with. I admire your ingenuity, perseverance, aptitude, and willingness to just 'jump in there' and get the job done. Your thread is inspiring, creative, educational, funny, sad, happy, and sometimes even a little wacky (what other build threads discuss sinus issues and methods to clear out a stuffed up nose?
) I look forward to my nearly daily dose of "What Doorgunner Did Today". Even though we live thousands of miles apart and in different countries, I feel like I've come to know you in a small way. I certainly have great respect for you and how you've kept going despite the curves that life has thrown at you.Keep on keepin' on Doorgunner- Everyone here at the Corvette Forum is on your side.
Doorgunner, you ROCK!!

I hope he never does either

LOL!PICs tonight of today's escapades.

I looked to the left and said (not out-loud though) "If I install the door hardware, push-button lock, and the door panel, the left side of the interior will be completed".....so all the hardware was removed and re-finished (the window rollers and channels were re-finished last year when I replaced the driver's window......
Then sand down the door panel surface rust and put a coat of paint on it, and reinstall the hardware..........
Then it happened....the locksmith couldn't get the lock to work so I decided to wd-40 it, then take it apart........WRONG.........corroded....
corroded.............................
corroded................................ ..............
corroded................................ ..
corroded..............................
corroded.............................
corroded...................
corroded........................
corroded................................
organized/kinda'.......................
later that day..............much later..........4 hours later
......................
Conclusion: I finally found a repair that is equal to dash wiring!

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
But Gunner why did you go to locksmith in first place? You know your crazy *** was just going to pull it apart and rebuild it anyway.
What kind of politics? Like a guy who never served being the inspiration for God knows how many boys to go to war?
Sorry Gunner I couldn't help it. I sincerely apologize if I upset you in any way.

UPDATE: I was baffled....I couldn't finish the door assembly without the lock/I was also grounded/........then it hit me......take the tumbler out of the passenger door lock and install it in the driver lock! I did it.....it locks/unlocks like new....now I can order the gaskets and S.S. round bezels for both doors/then paint the doors......
Then the dog gave me an idea.....the door panel was warped from being in the attic....so I added some weight to it and will let it stay in the 85*F sun for a few hours.......
Then.........another idea......clean and paint the inner trim for the door panel while it flattens out......................so I did.................
Why.........I might even install the gauge cluster after I eat a snnnnnack!

Wow!!! That's impressive...if mine it would've hit the round file so I applaud your tenacity.
I have to agree with Majoho, I love your personality and style. I have been enjoying your posts here and in other threads. I am about 6 hours away on the north side of houston, and hope at some time to be able to road trip your way. Still working on my project to get some level of confidence in it's reliability. I've been left broken down roadside 3 times in the last year, so not there yet

Here's the afternoons work/not much but in the right direction. The passenger's door panel gets the 30 lb. sandbag-in-the-sun flattening treatment........
The "new"/"re-conditioned" soft top gets stretched out after the day's project was completed...the refinished door panel is installed (minus the door pull handle)...............
A close-up of the panel...it looks weird after a year/not seeing it on the pegboard any more/there's a little more work left to glue some loose down and install the door pull tomorrow......
I have to pick up the lock tumbler springs tomorrow so I can start on the passenger's side door (I really need to finish that dash!)

True, so true.
