Paint Code Question?
I have a 72 that has a paint code of 992, the car looks to be Targa Blue, it also looks like it has been repainted some time in the past. The color charts I can find online do NOT list 992 as a 1972 color code (they do however list it as "Laguna Gray Metallic" for 1970).
I am confused, and yes the car is definitely a 72, all other numbers on the car match up perfectly, but this paint code is baffling me!
Any light that can be shed on this would be truly appreciated. I want to repaint the car, but I want to paint the original color.

There COULD be an error on your trim tag, but that's not likely.
Is there ANY chance that the trim tag has been replaced for some reason? How do the rivets that hold it in place look?
I think I'd begin to look for signs of what the original color on the car was. You might begin by removing the sill plates to see what color is there. Lift the carpet slightly and look under it for overspray while the sill plates are off. Also, if you look carefully in the wiper well you may see signs of another color.
Have you ever looked for signs that the tank sheet might still be on top of the gas tank? The original color would be listed on it.
How about a few pictures of your car? We LIKE pictures!

What is the code in the upper right corner of the tag? Should be one letter followed by two digits like A01 or H23 etc.
What are the last five digits of your VIN.?
Does the interior colour match up with the tag?

The car is currently in the shop getting a few leaks taken care of so I can't check much on it until it gets back in a few days. It is scheduled to go to the paint shop when its done fixing the multiple oil leaks fixed.
The only color I can see in the numerous chips in the paint is blue (can't really tell if it is the same shade of blue since the current paint is so oxidized.
The rivets in the trim tag look original to me.
The interior color is correct (400=black)
The code in the upper right is "G09", last five of the VIN are 06291
I will get more pictures and post them when I get the car back.

It's not your tag, probably from a '70 that was built around July 9 1970.
The rivets don't look like undisturbed GM originals.

A '72 with that VIN should have a trim tag reading D02 maybe D03. Your car was built around November 2nd or 3rd 1971.

That is what I was afraid of, why would the trim tag have been changed?
I thought maybe the car had a front clip put on it from another car, but the tag is mounted to the door pillar so it makes no sense.
Is there anyway to see if the build sheet is still on the gas tank without dropping the tank?

That is very peculiar for someone to replace a trim tag with a color the car is not even painted, but even more peculiar someone replaced it with a trim tag from a whole other year.
