Default Headlight relay kit?

Ok I've been trying to figure out why my headlight relay kit doesn't work so today I thought I'd dig into it deeper. What I bought was a 4 headlight relay kit from LMC truck for a mid 80s Chevy truck with 4 headlights. At first I thought I did not have a good enough ground so I ran both the ground and hot wire directly to the alternator. Now when I turn on the headlights all four are on but the high beams are dim. When I switch to the high beams then the high beams are fully lit but the low beams are dim. Switch back to lows and all four stay on but as described as above. I don't get it!! I'm stumped!!

Anyone? I actually switched back to the factory harness and it's doing the same thing. I've checked the wiring and ohm'd them out and all seem good. Still can't figure out why it's doing this. Could it be the h/l switch? I know I replaced that within the last 6 months or so.

They look good. Before I left for work I checked for voltage at all the headlight plugs and was getting 11.8 or so volts. (car was not running) Going from power to ground in the plug and even when I turned on the high beams. So that tells me that the lights should light up like they should. So maybe the prongs are not sitting correctly in the plastic socket and making connections to the headlight. Just theroizing, but will mess with it some more when I get off tonight.

I just read that if you have voltage then it's a ground issue so I ran a ground from the alternator out to the headlight plugs and still nothing. Now maybe this is a clue for someone but while the headlights were on (none plugged in) the green wire on the passenger side low beam was getting extremely hot. All the others were cool to the touch. So what does that mean?? And tthat was with the ground wire removed.

Do the headlights have a dedicated ground line going to the frame?
