73 L82 w/310k miles - all with points.

Caution: supposedly NOS Delco packaged points may be poorly made china imposters. I've installed hundreds of sets of Delco points over the years and never had a failure. UNTIL - the only two times points failed me were with supposedly-OEM Delco packaged points bought at swap meets. In both cases the flat metal spring broke.

So I switched to a Napa-bought pair (Blue Streak or Elgin if I recall) and they've been fine for years and many miles.

Still running points here. If it's not broke why "fix" it ?

Hi Mooser,

Been a while since we talked last - hopefully life is good and the car is still progressing.

Why did you "dump" the Pertonix ignition ?

I have always run points in my '59 - drag racing etc.
No problems till last time I had the car out : started to cut out when lifting off the throttle just cruising along.

Hoping it's a carb issue so will rebuild and hope for the best.

People keep praising their Pertronix conversions so started thinking (until now) of giving it a try.
Now I think maybe I'll go with the Lectric conversion because it looks like you could readily (side of road) convert back to points and condenser.

Anyway will be interested in why you and others have gone away from Pertronix ? and experience with Lectric 38131 conversion ?

Thanks

I didn't really notice much of a change (good or bad) when I switched to the pertronix unit. While I was chasing a intermittent miss/stumble amongst other items I pulled the pertronix out and dropped in a new set of points (problem ended up being the vac-advance unit being right on the verge of the engine vacuum, luckily I know a guy who had a VC181 can and that seemed to cure it)

But anyway, since there wasn't any great improvement and I always carried the points, original wire, and a screwdriver to change back on the side of the road JIC it quit (asking around, I was surprised at how many others also do this) I figured WTH am I doing? and left the points in.

That being said, drove it for a year with no issues, brother has had them on a couple of the older cars also with no issues.

I've got the pertronix II unit and their coil in a box on the shelf just in case I ever change my mind, if you want to give it a try let me know.

As far as progress, I've only recently managed to get back into the shop and although I'm getting better every day, still not anywhere near ready to tackle it yet, hopefully soon before I forget how it all goes back together
