Mine are installed and are fine, had to do a little modifying on the backup lens so they fit all the way against the lens but its not rocket science. The 85mm fits and works great.
I posted the exact same DIY build thread on the 3 major Corvette forums, you probably saw it on one of them!
Your tail lights are different from the early style like mine, so the 85mm LED rings may or may not work. To find out, you will have to cut yours apart and measure. If the 85mm do not work, the LED rings come in several additional sizes.
I have two questions:
1.) When you say daytime running lights, which lights are you referring too? I have never tried this, but does the license place light come on with the headlights or the yellow turnsignals? If I pull out my light lever half way, I will only turn on the yellow turn signals in the front. I dont' know about the back I never checked and my car is in the shop right now, so I do the same thing, will them come on with the turn signals or only if the headlights are on.
2.) Can you describe a little more what you did in your DIY thread where you modded the bump or the connectors to the license plate connection. I was not sure what you were talking about the bump and whatnot.
I got this idea from '75, then added very subtle chrome rings (actually, womens bracelets filed down on one side). The backup lights are now in the license bracket--available several places online.
bump. I think I am going to try to make my own by destroying a couple aftermarket lens. But I would still like to know if anyone has ever tried to separate the lens from the housing.
I am also still hoping for more ideas if anyone has seen good ones or just has an idea and hasn't spent time and money to try it.

I attempted to separate mine , but the plastic was so old and brittle they broke. So then that's when I decided to use the trim rings

I used a dremel cutoff wheel made for plastic to cut mine apart. I chucked it up in a milling machine (drill press could work), used the worktable to keep the lens level, and slowly cut around the perimeter of the lens. I cut through the white plastic, a little behind the original bond with the lens.
Once I got all of the LED stuff in place, I glued them back together with Permatex 5-min Plastic Weld Epoxy. I then ran a bead of regular 30-min epoxy over the seam to ensure it was sealed up.
My lenses are the stock '75-'79 style - I don't know how this would correlate to the later lenses.
