How many of you have a trailer hitch on the stern of your cars? My new-to-me '76 project has one; judging by the way it's mounted it might be factory. Was this an option on 'Vettes? Seems way dumb to me, but what do I know? Far as I'm concerned, if I wanna tow something, I've got a truck for that.
I'm thinking of cutting that protuberance off. Or - maybe sticking one of those silly twirly-toys in it to annoy drivers behind me.
i have a hitch on my 69. it keeps people from running into my rear end. i have not been brave enough to try towing anything with it.
it just bolts to the bumpers.
the picture is my old car going on the trailer to cross the country this week.
i can send you some other pics if you want a closer look.
...Looks like mine was a factory installation - serious welds on the cross member...
I believe the factory package was bolt up; same for the dealer installs. Of course, the hitch could have been added by a previous owner at any point in the past.
All that does is bend your bumper and crack the glass if it's more than a parking lot bump.
I surfed all the hitch companies and asked Curt's website. Nothing before a '75 for Curt. No one else lists one. I guesss we're on our own for making one. My vote is for a square-stock cross piece on the frame horns. At least the gas tank will be protected if you're rear ended.
I bought my '77 last spring and it came with a hitch, which I believe was original. I took it off - just a few bolts and a cable.
I'm beginning to think the rig on my car is aftermarket; it's a standard 2" drawbar/receiver rig. The type on your car (another beauty) looks like a different design. I need to take a closer look to see how the hitch is fastened on my car; been too busy with brakes and other projects to get into it yet.
PS: We used to live in Issaquah, not terribly far south of you. Still have our house up there - a rental these days.
(during the summer local forum members meet at the XXX Root beer Drive-in in Issaquah)
Yep - that's quite different than mine. (I'll post pix later.)
XXX Root Beer Drive-in! Some of my fondest memories of living there were mornings spent drooling at all those fine rides. If memory serves, there were several Corvette/Chevy specific shows. Occasionally drove my long gone MGTD down to the gatherings; the li'll beast looked quite out of place in that crowd.

I bought my 70 in 71 and put a hitch like yours on in 73. I towed my ski boat with it for a couple of summers and it worked out great except that I had to replace the clutch in 75 or 76. I've always been easy on clutches and can only suppose it was the towing that made the clutch slip. The second clutch is still in the car and is, only now, beginning to chatter slightly. I'm not to sure how much cushion you'll get in a rear ender with a hitch bolted directly to the bumper. Probably not much. I replaced my bumpers later and haven't towed with the Corvette in the last 38 years or so. The C3 is certainly stout enough and powerful enough to tow but I'm sure the automatic would serve better than the 4sp.
