Hi All, Need to replace the master cylinder on my 79. Who has a decent master? Should I get a reman or new? Just wondering what brand is the best.
Thanks
those that tell you to try and rebuild yours are dead on.replacement parts for these cars are a crap shoot,no matter whose name is on the box, or on the part for that matter.
If you're looking to do this rebuild yourself we have the master cylinder rebuild kits in stock.
We also have brand new GM Correct Delco master cylinders in stock with Correct Casting number 5460346 for 77-82. These have the GM correct finish and correct cap. We also have brand new generic master cylinders that are the same in every way as the Delco just no casting numbers or stamps.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Be aware that most master cylinders have pitting in the bore from corrosion and will be futile to rebuild.
The exact same scenario as why ss sleeves were put in calipers. Check the bore carefully if rebuilding.
For the small difference in price, always go with a new cylinder if replacing, they are dirt cheap.
You have to remove the master cylinder either way...whether you rebuild it or replace it. So why wouldn't you just remove the single snapring behind the valves and pull it apart to look at it???
If the bore looks good, rebuild it; if the bore is damaged/pitted, replace it.
P.S. A rebuild kit for the M/C will cost you as much as a rebuilt swap unit. But, the quality of the "new" unit is not nearly as good as the OEM original unit. If your car has its original M/C and the bore is good, clean it out well and rebuild it. Most of the Corvette parts places sell rebuild kits. Don't forget to bleed the M/C before you re-install it.
