im going to look at this car this weekend. sale on ebay did not go through. his reserve was 22k. it looks like a pretty good deal to me but i dont know much about 68s and would like opinions on if 22k is a fair deal. also whats not correct on it. it is a #s matching engine. also with manual steer
ing how hard is steering? i had a pinto back in 70s and it was super hard to steer. all info appreciated, thanks,Nutsy http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-Corvette-Convertible-/251367770697?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=a4bo3l6cjkHmUNg92WFmsDlecpc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Looks like a nice car from the pics..there are things that will need to be scrutinized when you inspect it in person (rust-frame-bird cage).
As for the hard to steer with manual steering, I wouldn't be concerned, you will have such an adrenaline rush when driving, you won't even notice.
The "got to have a good deal" in me, would have to offer less, no one bought it for the full reserve price, you are there presumably with cash in hand.
Manual steering only affects you when turning into a parking space (builds up your biceps/triceps)....once the car is rolling faster than 5mph, it steers easily.
Also....it is very easy to have $22,000 invested in a dependable car with good paint and tires.
Looks like a very nice car from the ebay photos, and has been well cared for inside and out. I agree with the typical rust inspection comments from other CF members. Really check the frame to see if there are any signs of a previous wreck, etc. $22,000 is probably reasonable, but I'll bet he'll take less since his ebay auction got little response. Take cash and negotiate hard. But, if you want it, $22,000 isn't out of the right range, especially since it's a 4-speed, convertible. As they say, "when the top goes now, the price goes up."
You also need to decide what you goal is before you buy it ... Restore, modify to your personal taste, or do a restomod. If you plan to do either of the latter options, it's an expensive "starter" car. If you're going to restore, it looks like a really good candidate.
The seller presents it as a "high quality driver". No mention of #s matching makes me wonder if it's a NOM. First thing I'd check if #s are important to you.

i spoke to him thru emails and he said it is #s matching. does it look correct under hood as far as parts right for a 68?
Hi Nutsy,
It looks like a nice car for that money to me too.
You asked "what's not correct?"
I'll give you an obvious one... the exhaust is replaced with what appears to be an aluminized system, which doesn't bother me.... but the pipes should be welded to the mufflers, not joined with a clamp and slip-fit, which does.
If the car is rust free, runs and drives well, and has most of it's original parts I think $22 is a good price.
Regards,
Alan

If it's the original motor, it's not rusty, doesn't need a paint job and the color codes are correct, it's certainly worthy of an in person inspection at that price. The interior looks a little worn but the car appears basically unmolested.
i asked owner to email several pics of under car, glad he did. saved me a 200 mile round trip. under car is really rusted way more than im comfortable with. i can see it needing lots of work in the near future. bottom of oil pan is even rusted bad. inner side of rims also rusted bad. looks like car was stored in a really damp place for some time. thanks to all who replied, nutsy
Actually, those are pretty good odds. That was a "killer" color combination that year and many were made...both with 4-speeds and auto trannys. And I still think that's a mighty nice combo for a C3.

I drove my 68 for 40 years with manual steering in the quick-steer hole on the linkage. No problem whatsoever. I recently installed power rack and pinion and kinda wish I'd left it alone.
