I have driven lots of vettes throughout the years being in the automotive industry. All years, all generations up until the c-6 came out. Some were stick and some were auto. All were fun to drive. Its true that a 4-speed will make any car more fun to drive, But I believe the Corvette is one of those very few cars out there that is still cool to own as an auto also.
My current car is the first Corvette (77) that I have owned and having a 4-speed car of any kind was never a must have for me. So its an auto and I'm good with that. I may decide to do a swap down the road but for now, She still has me exited so whats the diff?

Same here, Vette has an automatic. 4 speeds were fun as a kid, but now I enjoy just easy cruising. The Vette will be our retirement toy, to just ride around sight seeing with our coffee cups.
Our 66 goat has a 4 speed, so if I get the urge to melt tires, bust teeth off gears, or attempt to rip a Hurst shifter out of the floor, I`ll dust it off and take a spin!
Besides, the Grand Prix has an automatic, and it can still do this....
For myself, almost any vehicle is better and more enjoyable with a standard shift...and generally speaking, a manual transmission gives better gas mileage and is more durable and longer lasting than an automatic....
Proper sports cars should have 3 pedals but sometimes a guy has to build what he has available. The 2004r in my car was built to the hilt with positve presure valve body. Neck snaping shifts at WOT.
Its definitely a rare beast these days having a 4 speed stick still around in today's world of 6 and even 7 speed transmissions. I love the reaction younger people have when they see my car and say "it's only a 4-speed? Jeez how fast does it go? 35?" or the occasional older guy mention "I haven't seen a 4-speed in years!"
'72 is a 4 speed. All the DD vehicles are automatics. Seems strange that whenever this topic comes up, the guys with automatics have to justify why they have one. Why do they drive them like they're sticks then, or install shift kits so they bang and chirp like they're sticks?
