Default Quick Question re: Pitman Arm

Im getting ready to convert my 68 from MS to PS. Looking at the conversion kits offered by sponsored members, there is no mention of swapping out the steering box so it seems I don't need to change that out. The kit however includes a pitman arm. I searched to see if there is a PS version and MS version of the pitman arm, since I have one already, but only one is listed for 63-69. So, based on my search of multiple sites, it seems I use the same pitman arm and steering box - right?

There are two pitman arms, power steering and manual steering. They both fit 63-82 steering boxes. The ps arm is arched for clearance. You can run a ps arm on a manual steering car but you can't run a manual arm on a car with ps.

Corvette Pitman Arm, What is the difference between power steering and non?

The pitman arms are the same 63-82 with or without power steering. <--- This statement was to show that if you have power steering or if you don't have it... the non power steering pitman arm fit 63-82 and the power steering pitman arm fit 63-82.. If you look at the PDF you'll see all the differences.

PS casting number ends in #383, MS casting number ends in #451

You do not want a manual arm on a power set up. I had both arms but accidentally put the manual one back on when I converted to PS.

Not good.

Thanks all for your replies. 70Yellow's side-by-side shows the subtle difference between the two to allow clearance. I will order the PS arm. Just found it odd I didn't see two arms offered on vendor sites and didn't want to make the wrong assumption. You guys rock!

*Edit* - I don't normally criticize Willcox but you are wrong on this matter.
That's what I thought ihe said, initially. I think what he's saying is the power steering arms are the same for 68 - 82, manual steering arms the same for 68 - 82. I don't think he meant to say the power steering pitman arm is the same as the manul steering. You can see the difference in the photos. I noted the end where the pitman arm connects to the center link or power steering control is different, the power steering arm had a different offset.

When I converted my car from manual to power steering I had issues with the control valve. The problems went away when I changed the pitmam arm to the one meant for power steering. I assumed something in the geometry of the manual arm was the problem.

Okay... let me re-state this... Power to non power are different as our PDF shows.

If you have power steering The pitman arm is the same from 63-82,

If you don't have power steering the pitman arm is the same 63-82.

I was attempting to address his question about what years fit what.
"one is listed for 63-69" I apologize I should have put a comma in there or made my statement a bit more clear.

AAAAAHAAA.....

Problem resolved/No International crisis......

Just a comma, and some re(dash)wording cleared up everything.

Being a rookie...I appreciate veterans showing the small differences in parts that I will be needing---sooner or later!

Thanks to all for responding and schooling me. Willcox, I hope you have inventory and can ship right away, as I will need to purchase the PS pitman arm and all of the mounting hardware parts. I have all of the major components (drag link, dampener, pump, pulleys, hydraulic lines), so I basically need your conversion kit w/o the mentioned items.

There is no way for me to check today, but you should be in good shape. If there is something we are out of they'll just drop ship it from the supplier direct to you.

You can see that there is a bit more difference when you look from the side at the manual vs power pitman arms.

I shipped my steering box up to Gary Ramadei on Tuesday for inspection, as it was seeping red Mobil 1 grease. He pulled it apart and repacked with Coastal clear grease, replaced a faulty seal, painted the unit and installed the PS pitman arm and shipped it back to me Wednesday night. I installed it back on the car w/o issue this afternoon. Gary did an exceptional job ~ which is no surprise based on his reputation, and I highly recommend him to anyone needing work on their steering box!! Hopefully within the next week or so I'll get with Gordon M and finish the PS conversion. Thanks again to everyone that helped me on this post!!!

Gary is a whiz. Two years now on a blue-printed box on my 1974. No fuss, no muss, and no leaks with that Coastal grease. Good luck with the rest of your steering system project!

Lupigiato, are you using your existing maual box? Are you using a kit or piecing it together? Any chance of listing the parts? I too would love to upgrade to power steering.
Thanks

Thanks

You can buy a PS conversion kit like the one at the link below. I sourced all of the major components through this forum's "parts for sale" section (i.e. Pump, valve, cylinder, relay rod, etc.) and purchased all of the mounting hardware components that make up the kit.
