Default 1972 Coupe

I made the purchase, but wanted some feedback. Here are body and interior pics. Frame is is good condition, no rust. It is a numbers matching vehicle. I have located the block, right & left exhaust, and intake numbers. The only question mark with the numbers is that the block is for an early 1972, but the exhaust is for a late 1972.

Hi tb,
It looks like you've found a nice looking car there!
Good Luck with it!
The answers to your questions about numbers depends on the assembly date of the engine stamped on it's pad and then on the numbers and casting dates on the block, exhaust manifolds, and intake manifold you mention compared to the cars build date.
The casting dates on the parts need to be before the date the engine was assembled, and then the engine assembly date needs to be before the car was assembled in St.Louis. Generally dates not exceeding 6 months before the car's build date are acceptable.
Again, NICE looking 72!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan! We looked long and hard for the "right" car. Here are two pics of the engine compartment.

Default Beautiful Corvette!!!

Congratulations!!! Beautiful Corvette!!! And Happy Lady too!!!

If you want to know more about originality, you might purchase:

NCRS 1970-72 Technical Information and Judging Guide

Richard Prince's Corvette 1968-1982 Restoration Guide

Also, you can learn a great deal from:

1972 Corvette Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) and the 1972 Chevrolet Service Manual (both of these are GM factory books)

But most importantly, enjoy your new Corvette!!!

??? There was no change in block numbers in '72. Only the right hand side exhaust manifold changed p/n in '72. Left side was the same for many years

Mike, I found data that shows the block # for an early 72 is 3970010 and for a late 72 is 3970014. My block is 3970010 and I have the same number on both right and left exhaust manifolds.

The number on the pad- the VIN derivative and the assembly code- are the only numbers that will determine if the numbers "match."

010 blocks were produced in several years and many different vehicles.

The 0010 block is found throughout the production year whereas the 0014 has only been seen on late '72 and early '73s.

The 0010 block was produced from '69 through '80 in the multiple of millions at all three GM engine plants, probably the most common engine ever made by GM.

Your car having an 0010 block and 461 exhaust manifolds make perfect sense.

The VIN is 1Z37K2S511915 and the pad reads 12S51191 and assembly code V0113CKX

Hopefully the pad is 12S511915.

What's date on the trim tag? Should be F21 (Jan 21) or so.

Mike there was one last digit that I missed. The others were oily and easy to read, so the pad is 12S511915. I will look for the trim tag tomorrow.
