I am looking to add a C3 to my 1990 Zr1. It does not need to be a big engine one but what would be best model to get to drive and enjoy. I like the look of the chrome bumper models but are they the best drivers?
For the best driver I like the 1982. They came with the overdrive and fuel injection. Plus the quality was a little better when they switched to the Bowling green plant in 81.
Chrome bumper cars if you want to give up some luxury and gain a little horsepower.
Hi stc,
The early 68-82 cars are VERY different than the later cars. Corvettes changed a GREAT DEAL over those 15 years.
You mention "best drivers"....the later cars are probably more comfortable and better cruisers, but the early cars are probably better performers and more fun to drive.
The values over the entire 68-82 range probably do a pretty good job reflecting their desirability in owner's minds.
Regards,
Alan
I have a 1978. The first year of the large back window. It has a factory original 4spd and the l82 "performance" engine. In quotes because let's be honest, my Vette has less horsepower than a new Hyundai. Nevertheless, it will get up and go. The 4 speed in my opinion makes my corvette much more fun to drive for me. Even with the 200 or so horsepower it still feels spry connected to the 4 speed. I got it for pretty cheap. The chrome bumper cars are more desirable nowadays. I'd say if price is a concern go for a later model 78-82. They can be had inexpensively. And there is always a chance they will go up in value. If collectibility is a concern than I'd say 79 should be avoided due to the shear number of vetted produced that year. Bottom line, any one of them you'll get will be fun, aggravating, joyous, expensive, and beautiful.
