Have a big block 70 conv., 4 speed, bronze car. Received a gift from my honey that she bought me a R89W battery, and it will 'be here soon'.
My judging manual states R79W until serial number 11,000 or so. My serial number is 10,339 and I do have a couple of changeover things like a later factory alarm key escutcheon. Is the R89W going to be ok or should I 'stop the presses'?
The problem is that nobody makes an accurate reproduction of the R79 battery for our cars. What happens is that they take an R89 case (which isn't entirely accurate either) and slap an R79 label on it... That's it. There just isn't enough demand for a battery that was only used for two partial years in (I believe) only one car line.
Considering how close you are to the break point, I'd go with the R89. Remember that the serial number breaks aren't necessarily written in stone... There is typically variation in what was used as these changes went into production.
Thanks Stan and all who answered my question. I am going with the R89. Now I need to find the right caps for my vent hoses, as it didn't come with them.
