Etiquette is sometimes an unwritten practice, and a form of respect.
Even if I haven't logged in for a while, I would still respond, explaining that fact.
If I were listing something for sale, and long since sold it, I would respond informing the person that, also.
I answer PM's, it is the right thing to do.. there is already enough rudeness in this world, without adding to it.

Also find while they are asking you questions about your car provides me a chance to ask a few of my own about theirs. It is also a great way to meet people in your area by sending a PM offline that also have a corvette and make a new friend.

I just responded to a PM and have had a pleasant PM exchange in the past.
When I first joined this forum I reached out to a member to ask his personal opinion on something. Also wanted to get a sense of the general consensus of the members. He was extremely pleasant and forthright. While totally innocuous, some questions/inquiries are not for public consumption.
As others have stated, proper etiquette & respect.

I actually run into this person not long ago. I wanted to say something to him but didn't. What an A$$!
