I agree with Gordon.
I happened to flip the channel as I was leaving home just as that red '67 L88 crossed the block. The reserve price was fairly low (30-something K) but once the bidding went over a mil, I thought "who knew an old Chevy could get $o much attention?".
When it was said and done, I was stunned. $3.5M...? Wow. It's a jewel that will rarely have the brakes get hot or be seen without roped stanchions and an armed guard to keep the little people from drooling too close.
Think I'll take my old $17K mule out for a hop and enjoy the drive on a bright, sunny, Colorado winter day.
the Owens-Corning car that sold last year is a car built from parts taken off the line at GM, which means while it has an L-88 motor it`s not a true L-88, I believe the 2.6 mill Rebel car is a true L-88. I have the third car the O-C team built but never raced (documented 100%) and I can`t get $100K for mine (as built/raced pic in my avatar)
I get what you're saying but do any of these race cars have their born with numbers matching drivetrains? I thought the value was in the racing history. How much of these cars can possibly be original?
The rebel racer car was sold for 7k after the team was done with it. A comment was made by someone associated with the team that to them it was just an old race car.
A lot like all of the other race cars. Pushed aside for the next new racer. The Snake and Mongoose combos were sold off for newer racers back in the day. Found and restored by Prudhomme in someone else's junk piles, they did not make reserve. It seems with the resurgence in cackle fests and nostalgia drags, they would have been quite a coup for someone with the means to purchase and attend these events. It would be sad to see them in an obscure museum.
Any of these original cars are true gems. But the performance of them is really poor by today's standards. You can build or but a C3 or better for way less than this and drive the heck out of it and enjoy it. I like to see this stuff but the prices are just stupid. I applaud the guys who have the coin to do this but it is a piece of art, not a toy to have fun with. Ill take a base corvette and put way less dollars i. It and out perform these mega dollar cars anytime.

I always think it is a shame to spend so much money on a car you can't drive, but them I remember if you can drop a million or more on a car you can't drive, you probably have a bunch of amazing cars you can drive.
Anyway, it is not a problem I will have to worry about.

Looking forward to hearing of the results on those cars! The price on the green LS6/ZR2 was right in line with past examples, the Ontario Orange and Warbonnet Yellow examples also brought mid four hundred thousands when ran through the auctions. I'm so grateful to have two original drive train LS6' s.
