Hello everyone
I want to change the valve cover gaskets and re paint the covers I was wondering if anybody new the exact procedure to torque down the covers I have read you tighten then re tighten after a bit
I think I am gonna use cork with some sealant I can get a torque wrench if needed
Thanks so much John
About the only mistake you can make is to make them too tight. Just make them snug and you should not have a problem. If you make them too tight you can dimple the covers or even split the cork gasket. Yep, one of them lessons learned things.
Cork and Permatex sealer. Don't over tighten. After you run it for a while just retorque until snug. I have after market covers and the rubber Felpro gasket didn't seal tight and leaked.
With a composition gasket, you need to tighten the bolts in stages. If you use full torque on the first bolt, it compresses; then as you tighten the others, you increase the load on the bolts already torqued.
If you make three rounds of tightening with increasing torque values, the covers are brought down very evenly and you will not end up distorting the covers or having widely differing torque values.
