Don't know of any SBC or BBC engines that were consistently stamped in more than one location.
No VIN numbers were stamped on the bellhousing.
Some years had the number stamped on the transmission housing.
Thanks Mike
I kinda muffed up the 'bellhousing vs tranny' housing. Like I said I'll look for it somewhere down the track. Might be a fun new thread if it is there. This one seems to have created a lively debate. I am supposed to be renovating my house like a good boy (read old fart), not zipping out and buying more toys to play with. If nothing else, I have learned a lot more about the history of my vette.
Hi,
Here's an example of the stamps on the transmission case. (1971)

I believe the Vin Derivative stamp was done at the same time as the engine pad was stamped and with the same stamp. So any characteristics seen in the stamp on the engine pad may typically also be seen on the transmission.
From this thread, I'm learning that the authorities down under require your engine to have the car's VIN stamped on it? How are replacement engines treated? Can you stamp the VIN on your current pad?

Wonder what happens if you buy a used replacement from a wrecker or rebuilder and it already has a vin stamped on it? Don't see how this can work or even what good restamping a block with your vin would do...

The VIN doesn’t have to be the engine number and generally it isn’t.
I you buy from a wrecker or engine rebuilder you need a receipt for proof of purchase.
The registering authorities will run the engine number to see that it’s not a stolen engine and if it’s good... you’re good to go.

Engine numbers typically get machined off during a rebuild. How are 'numberless' rebuilt engines dealt with?

That's what I was thinking. If the engine was not originally in the car, it either has the wrong vin or no vin. Anyone can stamp a vin on unless there is one already there so what would be the point? Even a warranty replacement would not have the right vin. Do you need to carry a bill of sale for your engine along with the registration?

When you fit an engine you have to have the car inspected (we call it a Blue Slip) for change of details. You Supply proof of purchase for the engine and as long as nothing screams out at the inspector that its suspect he gets a number from the relevant authorities.
As I’ve been told by the said authorities if you have proof of purchase they can’t say that it is or isn’t a stolen engine.
