I have a 1974 Corvette and have had it for 5 years. In all of those years up until 2013, it has been insured by New Jersey Manufacturers insurance through my parents, with just liability coverage. That was ridiculously expensive, so we took it off. Plus it wasn't actually "covering" the car.

Wanting to drive the car again, I contacted Hagerty. The policy would have been through my dad, it was in his name. They denied coverage because of the possibility that I might drive my car by myself (they were speechless when my dad told them "Yes he can drive it by himself if he wants to")

Condon Skelly basically says you can't use the car unless it is to an event. Don't see the point of even having a classic car if that is the only way you can use it.

Are there ANY insurance companies that would insure my Corvette? I'm 20 years old, but the policy would be under my dads name. I would be driving the car of course! I don't drive it that often, since 2009 when I got it, it has had maybe 2000 miles put onto it, because of the various states of restoration it has been in. My dad drives it, my mom drives it, I drive it.

Let me know.

I'll look into all of the suggestions!

I do not/ will not daily drive my Corvette. I have a daily driver 2009 Impala for that. The car is purely for a cruise or show. It has been insured through a "normal" car policy for the past 4 years, but the rates were preposterous - Over twice what my moms 2011 BMW 335i rates are.

I don't care if there is a mileage limit, I just want to be able to drive the car to keep it healthy. No point in letting the car sit and undo all of the work I've done!

I go to school and work a job. I pay for everything. Yet I know that it is basically impossible for a 20 year old to insure something like my case. Thus my parents would be the policy holder with me as a driver.

I just want some reasonably price insurance that actually covers the car for damage. There are too many idiots out there.

I have never been pulled over, never been ticketed. Three years ago I got into an accident. Not at fault, some fool ran a stop sign and wrecked me. Pure random chance there, which is why I want to protect my Corvette!

I'll take a look at all of the suggested options and report back. It might take a while though. It is finals the next two weeks and events for work on the weekends.

Try Grundy in Pa and see if they will write a policy for your dad. Ive had them for years and coverage is inexpensive and no restrictions on mileage drivers etc. Worth a look. They have a VIP package where they will insure all cars owned by the insured, including the classic. I change vehicles 3 to 4 times per year and they never give me any grief with the changes, insurance cards etc. Through the years have had all the major players but Grundy has been best for me. friends have had claims with them with no hassle either. Your dad as the car owner should have no issues getting a policy which will cover you as well. Good luck

Multi vehicle, good student, defensive driving course, good driving record. There are a lot.
I suspect this is bottom line. Good post. Anytime you have to list a male under 25 years of age as a driver of a corvette, it going to be expensive.

That's what I have for my Camaro .they are very picky too. Especially about WHO might be driving , and they only want very limited use too . Basically he needs a NORMAL insurance policy.

His Dad needs to add his son to his policy .

Needs to be garaged and mileage allowance is minimal....it's not intended for people who want to drive their cars .

His use and car is not a collector vehicle. There coverage is not intended for Sunday drives.

It's for cars stuck in a garage or trailered to shows .

Havent tried Grundy yet, but definitely will. Progressive is another, but at 120 a month it is basically what I was paying on my old plan, although 13 speeding tickets is a ton haha

If American Collectors is picky they definitely wont go for me, I'm sure they'll get scared off that a 20 year old with 5 years into restoring his car, and with a good driving record will ever drive his own car! What an idea!

I'll still probably give them a call though. It is going to take a while to call all of these companies. Hopefully it will be worth it, so I can drive my car again.

Try Hagerty as well http://www.hagerty.com/

I have mine with them. So long as you can prove its not your daily driver they will insure it as a classic car with no restrictions. I pay around $240 for the year.

it is just not practical to own a partial driver vette for a kid. the costs are just too prohibitive.. concentrate on your present goals and save your money and by the time you are 30 then you can buy your dream car. you are pissing away too much of your hard earned money into a corporation's coffers without getting real coverage. they don't want to cover you but will take your money if you are gullable enough to pay them their price. quit blowing money to insurance companies...

sell the car..take a few years off and then try again.

Old News Dept: people (ie: young males) driving powerful cars tend to wreck them (as well as others' vehicles) at a measurably higher rate than older drivers. Because these numbers can be verified by actuarial tables, insurcos will 'assign risks' to comparatively few underwriters willing to assume the contract.

It's an old reality of insurance markets: fewer participants equals MUCH higher premiums.

Definitely will look into this. The car is not even a little bit a daily driver. I've put only about 2000 miles on the car since I've owned it!

I will never sell the car, and it isn't a partial driver car. The car gets used so infrequently, basically just enough to keep it healthy. I agree that insurance is a total scam. But it is worth my time to look into every possible avenue, and if I find a reasonable company then I'll most likely go with it. But at the same time, I will not pay $2000 plus per year for just liability coverage. At that rate I'd rather just mothball the car and get something else. But I *really* don't want that to happen! The car has a brand new motor, everything else is brand new too. The damn thing runs so well it passes NJ emissions tests without any emission equipment (another scam, but I digress)

I think they need to have like an interview process for certain insurance coverages. Like I said, I'm not the type who would do something to possibly destroy all that I have worked for on my car. I want to protect it....but I know thatll never happen with insurance.

I agree! I must get the car back on the road soon. I'll check them out too.

It is going to take a while for all of this to happen with school and work. Not much time to talk to insurance people.

I've had State Farm for 30 plus years, I qualify for every discount and have no cancel for claims on all my policies.
Corvette coverage is available if your primary vehicles are insured with them. Fire and theft on mine in winter is 4.50 month, full coverage driving is a little over $50.00 a month.
