What speaker ohms are required for the original radio that was standard in a 72. Is there a specific brand that fits well in place of the original dash pad speakers?
The origional speakers were ten ohms.
Many of the currently available speakers are only four ohms. If you want to put a pair of speakers in the forward kick panels, and wire them in series (daisy chain them) with the upper speakers, you'll probably be all right.
Most of the time, I just listen to the engine anyhow...........
A few years ago I was able to locate 10 ohm speakers from my local dealer. He cross referenced the number and found the same speakers were used for several cars on the Chevy line and was able to order them in! It was probably 2011? I did have to change out the connectors.
The output impedence of the radio amp is 10 ohms. I would not suggest purchasing the 'reproduction' speaker...as the original speakers were junk, anyway. If you can find 8 ohm speakers, they will work fine and not cause any problem other than some distortion, if you turn the volume way up.
If you install a 4 ohm speaker and then turn the volume up, you will fry your radio amp!
If you install a 4 ohm speaker in the dash and wire it in "SERIES" mode with another 4 ohm speaker in the kickpanel, that will result in a total impedence of 8 ohms and will work well. It will also sound a whole lot better than that tinny, small speaker in the dash.
