Default Oil level

Hey everybody I just did an oil change on my 76 and put in a k+n filter
I put in five quarts but the oil level on the dipstick seems high does that make sense?

Assuming you ran the engine to fill the filter, mine does the same thing. Since you know there are 5 qts in there, no more, no less, consider the current level on the dipstick as the new proper level.

I ran it about ten minutes
Just want to make sure it's not too much

Depends on the size of the filter; either PF25 or PF35 equivalent.

I am not familiar with that product but if you put in five US quarts you will be fine.

Over the years there have been different dipsticks and sleeves available for 350 engines. I suspect that either one or both are not correct for your engine. A non sock oilpan can also be a factor.

That makes sense but I believe it's all original strange
Maybe dipstick has been replaced but I don't think the pan has but I'm not a super pro like you guys
But anyhow I put in 5 quarts and I won't drain any out based on all of your advice
I will just make my new full mark higher

With the "normal"(small) oil filter they actually only hold 4 1/2 quarts but it's common to put in 5 after a change.
Lot of guys go with the larger quart size filter with 5 quarts of oil.

Well I don't know how much the filter holds but its twice as big as the one I put into the Hondas
Just in case it's not right is it ok to have it overfilled by that amount
I used k+n filter part hp-2002

I have read some bad stuff about overfilling the oil so I just drained a little out to put it to the full mark
Maybe the filters they put in 1976 were bigger than the normal ones you get now

If the oil level is above the "HOT" mark when the oil is cold, you have too much oil in it. The SB engine should get 4 quarts of oil...plus 1/2 quart if the filter is changed. When you check the dipstick with 'cold' oil, it will be slightly below the "HOT" fill line. Once the engine warms up, the oil level should check full at the "HOT" mark.

If you only have 1/2 quart too much oil in it, that's not a big deal. But, any amount of excess oil will cause additional drag and 'oil churning' due to the crankshaft counter-weights plowing though that excess oil.

I've got a aftermarket oil pan, runs 7qts... Takes 7.5 with my filter... I've also got a aftermarket chrome dipstick... So I checked at the 7.5 qt line and mine is fairly accurate... So, at time of oil change , just make sure where the dipstick reads, and if it's not quite right, make some scratches on the dipstick so you know for yourself.
