From the web.....
A corvette (sometimes corvet) is a small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship,
"The Mako Shark: Swift, Smart and Deadly"
The Shortfin Mako is the fastest species of shark.
Stingrays are usually very docile and curious, their usual reaction being to flee any disturbance,
The flattened bodies of stingrays allow them to effectively conceal themselves in their environment.
Can't say my vette was ever any good at concealment and its not very docile either, more of a shark really:-)
Here's one for you. The idea is to be fast and fleeting. Keep all of the other more dangerous, slower cars behind you on the track. As for docile, you're not afraid to go up and look one over but I'm pretty sure most would still say not to touch. Ehh, it works.
Hi,
Wasn't the Stingray name generated quite a few years before our cars… in fact back in 1957 for a race car that became a concept car that grew out of the Corvette SS. From it's design sprang the 63-67 cars.
So the name really isn't a reflection of what our cars are in any way.
Regards,
Alan
Hahaha. Good discussion. Funny thing is, most people who do not own a 63-82 Vette always ask "wow, is that a Stingray"? As cool as Stingray (Sting Ray) sounds, the C3 looks like its design concept species "Mako", and to me sounds meaner, faster and more powerful.
Try explaining that your 68 isn't a Stingray but every other Corvette between 1963 to 1976 is. The look of disappointment on their face says it all. My car is a Shark, Mako Shark.
Great point Iopozza! I have a 68 and I hear that question all the time. It's tiresome. It's a Corvette. Period.
I absoultly agree it's a CORVETTE. I think the name Stingray is just plain STUPID. My '69 has the name on the side but I can't remove it without leaving holes and making my Corvette less original. These cars should have been named Shark.
Around the house my '69 is referred to as either the Gold Car or the '69, as opposed to the Red Car, my '07 ZO6.
To each his own.
