Yes. But gas is not the best thing to use, because it is flammable and more toxic to you. Simple Green or Purple Power and water will clean it just as well (use a small bristle brush). It's probably better if you open it up so it will dry more quickly.

I paint the housing semi-gloss black, the aluminum end piece with VHT aluminum paint, and the end plate with Dupli-Color engine enamel 'clear'. You might also want to check out the condition of the contacts in the solenoid...or rebuild it...or replace it.

I have my starter sitting on my work bench all greasy and oily to. I have been using simple green so I am glad to hear that it can be used. Never took it apart so yes it would be nice to know if anything will come flying out or what to watch for.

Degrease with varsol, simple green, engine cleaner, etc.
[IMG][/IMG]

Blow everything apart, check the bushings and brushes. Wash it down with some electrical contact cleaner (OK I used brake cleaner) and blow it out with compressed air.
[IMG][/IMG]

you can lightly sand (400grit) the armature if it need it
[IMG][/IMG]

Sand & wipe it down with lacquer thinner, waz & grease remover, Pre-prep, whatever. Paint, powder coat, white grease into the bushings and on the pivots, slides, etc and back in business.
