I've been told that a 68 coupe 427/400 4sp A/C is quite rare. (1 of about 150 or so cars). How can I verify? Hagerty valuation doesn't seem to think much more of them value wise than a 390hp.
1. Is it really rare?
2. Does rare mean desirable/valuable?
3. Opinions on collectability.
Thanks Guys.
Mike
Not "rare". Car would have higher value in hot areas of U.S. (or overseas)....if the A/C works. Nice car; but not going to make you rich if you sell it.

Whoever came up with the quantity of 150 was just guessing. GM did not keep statistics on combinations of options.
No one knows for sure how many 68 coupes + 427/400 + 4 speed + AC were built.

You can't. There is no existing data available for options combinations.
I agree with Mike, the 1 of 150 figure is complete BS. The 1932 figure is only for the total number of 400hp cars produced. All you can honestly say is the car in question is 1 of 1932.

I don't think A/C adds value the way it (apparently) does with a 72 LT-1 convertible, for example. OTOH, I think an L-68 is worth a few bucks more than the L-36. Hagerty thinks our cars have declined in value over the past few years!!!!
GM also keep up with the number of 1968 Vettes made with each of their main options including the Color. They did not keep up with interiors. As an example, If it was Tuxedo Black, only 708 were painted that color from the factory. You can get the same info for radio, tinted glasses, off road exhaust, type of transmissions, rear end , etc. What you do not know is the number of various combinations. You can speculate by looking in the Corvette Registry and then extrapolating up to the total production numbers.

I think the Corvette Registry is interesting, but keep in mind none of the information entered is verified. The data is soley up to whoever types it in.
