From about 1975 onwards (I think), Corvette adopted the standardized GM method of coding exterior paint schemes and colours on trim tags. The tone cars would use 'U' after the paint code to designate the upper parts of the car and 'L' for the lower part. Single coloured cars just used L after the paint code.
There's an old myth claiming the the L means lacquer and U means urethane. False.

So I am correct in thinking that the gold lower was not an option. But painted by the previous owner. I noticed it also has a third brake light. The tail light lenses don't seem to be stock. But I have seen the same ones on other year vettes.

Also, the spoilers were not available for the base coupe until the 1979 model...so those may have been added as well. Looks like the previous owner wished to mimic the Pace Car but with a black/gold paint scheme.
I have a 78 that I just picked up. The tag is a 192 trim with 19 L color. What foes the L mean. Thanks
if it was it was mine and I had it painted these colors after it’s paint was ruined on a construction site.
I would love to know if this really is my baby.
I doubt there are two '78's painted like this. I'd guess it was your car. Looks like Nysrx hasn't been to the forum for about 5 years. It would be great to get a current owner in touch with a previous owner. Maybe try sending him a private message. He might get an alert that he would respond to.
Good Luck
