Help I'm a newbie to corvettes and just purchased at 72 roadster, base motor with a 4 speed Ontario orange with saddle interior. Car has 30k on it all numbers match. Here is where I'm at; Fenders front and rear are flared, taillights have been replaced with 68 Firebird lights, fender egg crates have been removed and filled. Car has a Holley carb, headers with side exhaust. Other than that car is in excellent shape. Since I have to paint it, paint is good, but flares/taillights have got to go! Will changing the color affect resale value? Will it make a difference if I use press molded parts or hand laid parts. Are vette repo parts a better fit than the repo parts that I've found for other cars? I welcome any suggestions as to the how far to go in restoring this car.
Sorry to tell you this, but if you wanted a Corvette with an original body, you would've been better off, buying one that was original to begin with. You didn't post any pics, so we can see what condition its in, or if the mods are tastefully done or not, becuase if it was done well and the paint is in excellent condition, you'd be better off leaving it alone or waiting until it really needs it.
From the description of the body modifications, it's neither going to be cheap or easy and may cost you far more than you think...
The car is better left alone and enjoyed as is...but like the others above posted give us some pics and see what is said by some very knowledgeable guys here on the forum. I agree with F22 100% unless you just cannot stand the way the car looks. C3's are only worth 5,000 to 25,000 so be wise in your path forward. I assume by you saying it is all matching numbers you mean the engine and tranny. With all the mods you listed your car is not original and I am not being negative. I just wanted to let you know is that if you want an all original car out of what you have then you are going to have a very expensive and long road ahead and will be very expensive.
From what I've learned on the Forum, you need not worry about affecting the value----it's already been affected.....paint it your favorite color. Do what you want with the car....and enjoy it...if you have a bucket of cash, aim for an "original look" as much as possible.
Other than that, use the bucket of money to make it safe and dependable....if there's any left in the bucket buy a replacement Corvette tail light clip and tail lights (that's what I've had to do so far).
If there is STILL some left---buy a pair of "egg-crates" and fit them into the fenders....

When you say "egg crates"...are we talking about the fender vents?
OP - pics please
Couldn't David just replace the fenders and rear clip and be back to stock in a jiffy? $1000 for the three pieces.
OK I'll post some pics soon. Got what I think was a good price and all the body/paint work will be less than 4k plus parts, my partner is a owns a high end body shop. Yes, by egg crates I mean fender vents. Do most of you agree that a color change will not effect resale?

If you are going to restore it to stock condition (new fenders all the way around etc..) and do it correctly the the color change (not original) will definitely effect the resale price. Even with your buddy doing the work inexpensively I think it's still going to be expensive. Some flares look pretty good. Post a few pictures.
You might want to take it slow with this. A couple of the mods you mention are sort of buzz words in certain circles. I'm not trying to fill your head with dreams of found fortune, and I'm not trying to suggest this is something it's not. Post some pics and do some research here before you do any restoring.
I have to agree with a few of they guys above. Changing body panels and colors is not cheep. Parts, labor, paint and you'd probably be into it for 10K and that's probably conservative. If you are trying to turn it back into a stock car you'd be better off buying one that's already stock. I know from experience.
If the paint is still in good shape, just drive it 'as-is' for a while (a few months). During that time, go to a lot of car shows with Corvettes and Corvette-only car shows, if you can. Study them all carefully, learn the differences between years, and ask owners about their feelings about modified cars vs. stock cars.
All this is just information for you to consider while building your own perspective about C3 vehicles and their "perceived" value. In time, you will determine what the best course of action should be with your car. It might well be better to find someone else to purchase the car you have now, then use the funds to purchase the car you REALLY want. It just seems that, right now, you don't really have a good idea of what you want.
Don't let US decide what you should do with your car. If you start re-configuring the car you have, it will cost you lots of money and lots of time...and you will recover neither if/when you sell it. Just sit on it awhile, until you know what you want.
