Default 69 Parking Brake Bracket Differences

This car is early 3000's. Sept 28 1968 tag date. I've replaced the frame with a later 69 frame and unlike the early frame, the later does not have the welded parking brake brackets on the #3 crossmember. I see that the vendors sell a bolt on bracket for 69's. My question is, when looking at the AIM, and looking at the vendor illustrations, (which seem to be taken from the AIM), They all appear to show the cable routed THROUGH the # 3 crossmember. This later frame has no holes to provide for that but does have holes for a bolt on bracket. Is the AIM incorrect in this area? And can I simply buy the bolt on brackets without having to drill for the cable to pass through #3? Do the bolt on brackets route the cable below #3 member? Thanks, Rick

Probably not, but the page in your AIM could have been a replacement page coming along after your car was assembled. Check the title block for a date for a page revision and the reason for the revision.

If the illustration is correct then there must be some late 69's out there with 2 holes through #3 where the cable passes through. There is a revision 11/68 stating "bracket added" along with "doc. req. removed" Anybody have a 69 in which the parking brake cable passes though the #3 crossmember on both the left and right sides??

Like I mentioned mine has the bolt holes for brackets but no holes for the cable to pass through. Hard for me to see how the same bracket works for through the member routing and beneath the member routing.
It looks as if there were at least 3 ways of doing this.
1.) Welded bracket, cable routed beneath #3 (my early 69 frame)
2.) Bolt on bracket with cable through #3 (depicted in AIM)
3.) Bolt on bracket with cable beneath #3 (my later 69 frame)

Hi 69,
Here's a 71 with the bolt on bracket and the e-brake cable passing just below the #3 crossmember. This is the passenger's side bracket.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the pic Alan. That's the way I'm going to go. I didn't want to weld the brackets on since the frame is all painted up nice and rustproofed inside. Still curious if any cars had the cable routed through the crossmember as the AIM shows.

Hi 69,
The E-brake page in the 71 AIM (UPC5, Sheet C20), still shows the cable passing THROUGH 2 holes in the crossmember, even with the bolt on bracket.
???

Alan

Thanks Alan And RedVert. I wonder if there are any cars with holes in #3 for the cables.

Hi 69,
It appears to me that the bracket would need to be mounted at least 1" higher on the crossmember in order for the cable to pass through the crossmember.
Now that I think about it, I 'guess' if the bracket were mounted upside-down the cable could pass through the crossmember.
Regards,
Alan

It's beginning to look as if the illustration in the AIM is simply drawn wrong. Thanks for checking the 71 AIM for us Alan.

I am sure that my March 68 coupe had the welded bracket with the cable under the crossmember. I had to buy a new GM frame due to the wonderful Cleveland, Ohio salt, in winter. By any chance is the 63-67 parking brake cable going through the #3 crossmember? I think the AIM drawing goofed. Lou.
