Default 73 hood modification

Hi
Has anyone tried to modify a stock hood to increase clearance for air cleaner on a bigger intake/carb, and or incorporate a fresh air intake? I'm thinking:
1. Acquire cheap used stock hood
2. Install new air intake and carb
3. Measure it up
4. Cut out a shaker style shape in hood
5. Glass in a riser to mate the cutout back onto the hood
6. Install a SS screen into front of raised cutout left open for fresh air

Sounds simple enough. I know there are aftermarket hoods that might do the same thing, or the big L88 (?) cowl, but that's not me.
Who's done this before and can share their advice success or nightmare?

Thanks

Shawn

I think a shaker hood like a Mopar would be awesome

there was a late c3 with a shaker hood trans am style Im sure if you google it it should pop out but an L88 shaker hood would look awesome. You should also check out the lt1/c7 hood that was being made by punisher vette to get some ideas. please keep us posted and lotsa pics please.

This is one of those $100 hood scoops. The trick is to grind out a notch in the hood so that the attachment line is flush.

That looks great! So is it a functional cowl, I assume so, so what I'm really wondering is did you have to cut up the scoop itself to get it vented??

Thanks for sharing, that looks great. Did you use mat or gel/putty to blend the line where the scoop meets the hood?

Thanks

Holy crap.... If you haven't checked out 76's thread on how to customize your hood and bring your vision to reality, you need to. It's a great documented effort of something along the lines of exactly what I had in mind, except I was going to bring the vent/scoop up instead of recessed. I can't wait to tackle it. Right up front, I'm totally going to cheat. I manage service teams that look after wind turbines, and I have a couple of guys who specialize in fibreglass and carbon Fiber repair of 100' long blades. Modifying a corvette hood should be an interesting diversion for them, and it will keep my garage clean!!! I feel your pain here 76, your shop floor looks like mine did after three cans of bondo on my 78 Scout.

Thanks for posting those pics, very educational, can't wait to see it all painted!!

Ya that's a cool shaker, I wonder if the air cleaner base for the ford kit just fits on any 4 barrel Holly or Edel carb???
