Default Stolen 1969 Corvette Goes Unclaimed

OK, before anyone starts getting any funny ideas, I need you to know that simply saying you lost a 1969 Corvette some years ago isn't going to fly to get this beauty.

However, if you think you might really be the rightful owner of this classic blue 'Vette stolen in Portland some 26 years ago, then you might want to give the office of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents a call.

They know it was taken in Portland in a robbery in '88, but don't know who owns it?

Exactly. No DMV records on the VIN?

That's assuming blue is its correct color. Blue exterior/red interior doesn't seem a factory combination. It also assumes the VIN plate is genuine.

There must be a law enforcement record of who filed the original stolen car report. If the insurance company paid off back in the day, that company may be the legal owner now.

'Zactly. I once inquired about purchasing a '57 Chevy Nomad baking in a police impound lot. The car had been stolen and recovered with an altered VIN. The car was identified by a "hidden" VIN. Due to the alteration of the original VIN, the treasured Nomad could not be sold and by law had to be crushed. I fear the same fate awaits that unfortunate Shark.

Hey...don't badmouth lawyers! The fact is 99% of all lawyers give the rest a bad name.

Full disclosure...my wife is a lawyer...one of the 1%...but someone else might not think so.

Default Vin

If the original VIN stamping is still readable on the frame and the last person that changed the title to his/her name after buying the Corvette and putting a tag on the car, the owner can be found from the original stamping from the frame. Law enforcement knows this procedure.
