Next job is the front bumper assembly.
Was in the same terrible state as the rest of the car:
A lot of rust and the bottom end probably hit the road a few time too much, the towing eye was bent and almost grinded through:
But there was a bigger issue, the front plate was bent forwards quite a lot. It should have been flat but you can see the large angle in it. Not good...
I cut the front support, bended the plate back and welded it up. I also removed the towing eye and manufactured an new solution: i'll use a threaded towing eye which connects behind the license plate so it won't protrude under the car anymore only to hit every speedbump in my town. Welded in a strong support plate in which i can bolt a threaded bar for towing.
Just need to sand, prime and paint.
The rest of the bumper parts are fiberglass. I repaired a few cracks and repainted them:
To be continued

The bumper support is ready, now waiting for my frame to return from powdercoating so i can start rebuilding.
Someone pointed out that the towing lug i removed also acted as a support for the lower air scoop. I will fabricate a new bracket to properly mount the scoop.

The best news in time came from my powdercoater saying he had something for me:
I cannot believe this started as a rusted and rotted frame one year ago.
I am very pleased, finished in one week right before my holiday. A very thick hard satin powdercoat covering all the scratches and welds and it looks better than new. A few small dimples from the rust which has been blasted out remains on the kick-up area but that is no biggie.
Let the assembly begin

Finally arrived on the fun part: rebuild:
Damn that frame looks good after powdercoating:
Front and rear bumper assembly mounted, it is a long car again:
Using new nuts & bolts just works so much nicer:
Started with a few small parts:
And the rest:
The deer-antler up front adds at least three feet alone to the car:
man i love this stage of the build:

First a little modification to my work:
The sheet metal washers i used were a bit to thin for the bumper assembly and i warped them quite easily so these had to come out:
I found in my AIM a picture of the bumper assembly with a large steel double washer and i copied that in thick steel sheet:
That sure looks better and didn't warped when torqued:

Some progress on my '80:
I had some issues with the gas tank, the outer steel shell had some pinholes from rust from the inside, the plastic bladder was still intact. I filled the space between inner and outer shell by injecting epoxy resin:
After repair i primed and painted the tank a course silver i had laying around, looks OK to me:
All that for a part which you cannot see with the the body on...
A small wire loom connects the generator to the battery and was worn and combined of several small pieces of wire...
No risc with brakes or electronics so i replaced it with new wires:
Suspension is next.

A little bit of progress: Cleaned and painted the front suspension and rebuild it with all new bushes, links and joints:
Put it back together, and i can check off another item of my bucket list:
