As I said before this car is incredibly slow. So, I started to look over the engine and came back to these two hoses to nowhere. I think the bigger one should go to the carb somewhere and the one from the carb should go to the empty hard line that returns to the gas tank. Am I correct?

SDS,
Your big, short hose connects to the bottom side of the air cleaner assembly. If you remove your top lid and filter, you should see a little flame arrester. It connects there. That hose looks to be bubbafied, I would consider purchasing a new one.
I believe your smaller connection, that appears plugged, usually has a small flexible rubber tubing connected to it that supplies the vacuum for the A.I.R. diverter valve.
Note that these connections are not the reason your car is "slow." Is this motor the original 327/300 HP motor? It sure looks like bubba has made a visit (looks like a late-C3 t-stat housing?), so you really need to determine what parts you may have. Look at the engine stamp pad and start there. Which cylinder heads do you have? Carburetor?
You'd be wise to work on the ignition and induction system.

Looks like the thermostatic coil is missing for the choke. That would be why it "does not want to stay running when first cranked".

I have a hose from the other valve cover that I think connects there or to the carb - I will check.

I had a thread where we IDed my motor as a '71 GM replacement motor, a truck intake, and a replacement (not good) carb.
Ok guys, need some help. Last class is tomorrow, so tonight I got to take the car apart a bit. Behind the gauges is a mess - loose wires everywhere and a mixture of aftermarket and factory wires.
If you can label anything please do.
Pic 1 is my helper before wife gets home.
I have no idea what that that relay is
The aftermarket gauge was halfass wired into a factory plug. There are two three prong plugs - one has a red, black, and green wire and the other has blue wires in it.
This post involves things found around shifter. There are loose wires around the shifter, a cat 5 cable, and wires going to the rear of the car. If you can label anything please help.
There is a cable that should attach to the blower controls but there are already two attached.
In the last pic you can see the other detached blower cable that is up near the dash pad.

Whats up with the tape on the upper radiation hose?
Is that tape or aluminum foil? Looks like something I would do if the hose is making contact with the fan shroud. The tape is there to protect the hose. Of course, you could install the hose so that it doesn't touch the fan shroud but Bubba (ie, me) prefers to manufacture a hose protector sheath.
Nope......wiring diagram courtesy of forum member PAPPAWANA!
I did spend 2 hours re-tracing all the little black lines with the correct color marking pens though (I got headaches looking at the black & white diagram while standing on my head chasing loose/cut/spliced/taped-up/shredded/fried wires).
Nuts! Yes.....according to the V.A. Shrinks (I am well-documented/my car---not so much)

That must have been a long process.
Any idea on the wires that terminate around the shifter? I think they are yellow and a lot of black wires.
Or, the green yellow and red coming from the back towards the shifter? Lights at bottom of center console?
Ok, got the car up on a lift. Good and bad things - the underside looks clean and original but like a survivor it has bad bushing and mounts. There are also a couple of leaks (oil filter and rear of transmission) - I plan just to monitor levels until motor swap.
Couple of things that I am now considering/planning -
Grand am power steering swap
Still looking for seats
Getting wiring under control and interior put back together.

I mean all and all things don't look to bad from what you are showing. yup bushings on front stabilizer are shot, anyway carry on.

Ok, after sending back switch to amazon I bought and installed the correct one - I now have blinkers, brake lights, and turn signals! I also bought and Edelbrock 1406 carb and intake to try to get back some HP from my current top end stuff. Also, started acquiring parts for an electric fan install.
