Default Install your own windshield

Seems many home builders have busted their windshields trying to remove them and getting in a hurry, I busted mine with a zombie hand holding my hood open,

But I am curious has anyone installed their own windshield and if so how did you set the depth correctly?

Thanks!

Het Bats, there was a great post with step by step pictures as well as info. I will try to find it, or maybe some one else knows. The guy had a blue vette that he was doing.

Bats, I did not have time to research everything but type in on the forum pws69. You can also go online and at the top type sealing a 69 windshield. There are more articles from pws69. The avatar picture is of his blue vert. I will try to find what I did with his pictures.
Good Luck

I haven't had to change a windshield in a corvette yet ( knock on wood ) but have changed many on Camaros, Chevelles, etc. and they use a glass setting ribbon which is 3/8 thick which sets the depth for you . If the corvettes use the same ribbon it is very easy. A note of caution though . Set it in dry and put masking tape on the glass and on the setting blocks with a pencil mark on the two pieces of tape to align them together as you are setting the glass. Then when you set the glass on the ribbon go straight down while aligning the pencil marks. The setting tape is very sticky and once you set the glass on it , you can't move it or take it loose. You get one shot.

Default C3 Windshield install

Here is one of them:

http://www.corvettecentral.com/newsl...pdf/413108.pdf

There was another one with a blue 69 Corvette that ended with "ain't she purty", but I can not find the link anymore.

Hope this helps.

By the way, whether to use butyl tape vrs urethane is a fun topic, almost as entertaining as what is the best oil for a Corvette, LOL's! Original C3's were urethane if I understand correctly. Modern windshield installers have to use urethane, maybe by law or certainly as an industry std?

Here is another one with more info:

Here are some links I saved.
I don't have time to look thru them right now.
I'm heading to the Barrett Jackson auction and was killing time when I saw this.
Hope this will help.

Hey Bats, I am on my 3rd windshield in 17 years. I had them installed by a local installer, very good and knowledgeable about our C-3s. I worked extensively with him during the install. I don't know if I would want to do it myself even now, but I have a couple of hints.
Before removing the windshield, if you are satisfied with the current installation, I used a couple of small aluminum clips secured to the fire wall, set to support the new windshield to the height of the current one. I used screws to mount the clips and just left them in place after the new window was installed.
After removing the old windshield, clean up is paramount. The old adheasive removed, and rust or holes repaired and the surface rust reformed and painted.
I then cut some 3/8ths in. thick rubber blocks to small pieces and super glued them around the widndshield frame.
Between the clips and rubber blocks, I could set and remove the windshield as needed to test fit the trim, adjust the height of the blocks for the best fit.
As mentioned above, a piece of masking tape on the top of the new glass will assure the proper left to right fit.
I left the rubber blocks in place when the new windshield was pressed into place just for my own piece of mind.
I an at Old Town on most Saturday nights and you are welcome to stop and talk and check it out any time you may get down that way.

all of the install kits I have used come with the rubber blocks to set the height of the glass. depth is controlled with the thickness of the rubber rope type seal that comes in the kit. one hint a glass repair guy gave me was to use a little bottle of liquid rubber (he gave me some) to coat any bare metal on the frame that gets exposed after cleaning off the old seal. It was like tire bead sealer but thinner and dried fast. probably some sort of rubber primer. Haven't seen it for sale but the standard 3m install kit is usually available at most body shop supply stores. only problem I ever ran into was a rear window on an old monte carlo or cutlas, it had a vinyl bonded seal, not the usuall rubber and was a pain to remove...

Hi Paul glad to see you still have that info. I had printed it out when I did my new wind shield frame and now I can't find it. I have plenty of other things to do so let us all know when you have that available.
Thanks

Thanks all,

Well I am learning a lot, some I didn't wanna know ,
I have also been playing with dune buggies and kit cars over 30 years most kit cars used real glass from some donor car, we would use in most cases the glass mounting system as per whatever the donor car used,

Not trying to make purists stomachs cramp up I was curious if modders had done the factory one better on glass installs.

So I understand none of the replacement windshields are as thick as stock, well doesn't that just suck out loud,
I would also assume some windshields are better than others.

I was all "scared" from all kinds of glass and windshield woes with my 86 that having a shop install the 69 windshield was going cost high dollars, but I just did an online estimate with safelite and they just want 275.00 + tax for them to come do the install including windshield,
I can afford that.

My big issue is I know I have some pillar rust, I am hoping not so bad as to have to use repair pieces but rather just fix what is there, but chest thumping speed of my work aside health and life demands I have no idea if I can fix said rust in a few days a few weeks or milked out longer,

So I call safelite, they will come pull the old windshield and make a work order then come back and install the new glass when I am done with cleaning and repairs,

So anyone use safelite? they okay or suck?

Lurk

I have to put one on my '69 soon and was planning on just paying safelite to do it but worried I'll get some idiot that has no clue how???

If it's not that hard to do maybe I'll consider doing it myself. But I won't have help other than a few minutes the neighbor might help. How long will it take once it's marked up? What happens if you screw up?

I am as cheap as they come and I fully believe that with care and time a person who is a bit savvy with tools and working on their car could do a very nice install,
But my time isn't money, it's actually worth more to me when I see SL will do it for 275 I am guessing that is about going rate and for me money well spent..

Seems my luck is when I try hard to be careful is right when the glass cracks....

Yeah. I pride myself and the only thing I haven't done myself was the frame repair work which I thought for a first time welder was a bit outta my league and I needed it done.

But the windshield...I need this thing drivable and on the road by April 1st so the few days it would probably take me fiddling with a windshield to get it right I'd almost rather pay sub $300 to skip that I guess.

But I also don't know if Safelite would do it right or not and the hassle of multiple tries by them over multiple weeks would also be a waste of my time.
