Default Door mirrors for 70 Coupe

Hi, has anyone come across a classic looking chrome mirror that gives a better view than the original mirrors? I see a lot of people fit the later Corvette ones but I was hoping to keep with something that fitted in with the era of the car. I've got a luggage rack fitted that it would be nice to use sometimes but reluctant to because it blocks the inside mirror view. Call me paranoid but I like to know what's happening behind me and the std door mirrors are very poor I thought . Had the same problem with my motorcycle and ended up fitting bar end mirrors rather than the fairing mounted factory ones that gave a nice view of your shoulders kinda just like the car ones give a nice view of its "haunches".

FWIW, I have a good friend that has added a convex (wide angle, just like modern cards use) glass to his '66 Chevelle from a local automotive glass shop. They cut it to fit his mirror's chrome frame and bracket assy. It looks and works just like a modern mirror.

In fact, just for fun, he had them etch the words "OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR ARE FORDS". The font is just as your daily driver shows "OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR" or similar.

I've queried the CF vendors for years, why they don't sell convex mirrors for the right-side? No answer yet....

Something a lot of people do, is replace their 68-74 mirror(s), with 75-79 chrome factory mirror(s). The 75-79 mirror is identical, but is an inch wider (6" vs 5"). It's not much of a difference, but it helps a little.

Thanks for that info. I wasn't aware the 75-79 mirror was wider, that would make a noticeable improvement.

I can tell you for a fact, that the pretty painted sport mirrors on the later C-3's actually are lower and give you a crummier rear view. Lou.

I put one of the "corporate issue" sport mirrors on my 68 door and would get a beautiful view of my rear fender hump, and nothing else. A drunk fixed that problem for me by turning left into the front of my car, snapped the power steering cylinder end off, the fender vacuum tank smashed my firewall all to heck and the door hinges and "A" pillar got smashed in, also.
Lou.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, are you going to resurrect it?

Also, thinking about it, for less than the cost of two mirrors, I can get a rear view camera and a clip over the top of the interior mirror view screen that also doubles as a GPS unit! Has anyone had success with one of these?

If you can't turn your head when changing lanes & see out the original mirror you can get a big truck trailer mirror for both sides. I have been driving Corvettes for 50 years & NEVER had a problem seeing with the left had side & rear view factory mirror.

Neither do I but the issue was if you had a load on the luggage rack!

Haggis, The accident happened in 1979, and that is my white "beater" now. I have owned it for 32 1/2 years. It was four years old when I bought it. She isn't NCRS material anymore, but I love driving the car anyway, especially with a ZZ4 crate motor, instead of my L-79 327/350HP motor. More torque now!
I didn't realize how bad the damage really was when they fixed it. The two plastic mounting points for the fuse block were broken off. They gave me the car and if I had gone through a water puddle, the water would have come up and shorted out the whole car.
I had to go to a junk yard to find a similar fuse block and pull all of the wires out and swap the blocks. Talk about a fun day. Lou.

If you are looking at your rear fender you don't have your mirrors adjusted correctly.

I was explaining that the sport mirrors are way lower than the chrome mirrors. That is why you mostly see the rear fender hump. If you adjust it up, you can look for airplanes!
The newer C-3's with the big back window have a flatter rear fender hump, so that you can see better. GM put these mirrors on most of their cars during that time period. Lou.

You obviously didn't follow the link I posted. You don't adjust them up; you adjust them out so you can view the blind spots that your rear view mirror doesn't cover.

probably 99% of the drivers don't adjust mirrors correctly and are doing it old school, correct way takes getting used to but improvement is dramatic, all my vehicles are adjusted properly now and can't believe I drove so long the old way, give it a try and you will see. good luck.
