Hi, is there a way to move my alternator forward via shims or any other way on my 71 small block? I noticed that my alternator belt is not in line with the pulley after doing the radiator. It may have been like this before but I never noticed. thanks
Washers work. Look closely in this pic, and you can see my washer spacer between the alt. bracket and the head near the valve cover, close to the intake...

I have been told in my restore job that GM alignments were sometimes off a little so you may be right with it being off when you started. Washers like suggested usually fix the problem.

Hi 2,
I'd think you'll need to be careful about shimming the bottom bracket too which might require a longer bolt depending on how far you move it.

Back in the late '70's when I had my '77, i had the same issue. I had belt squeak from poorly aligned alternator belt. This was factory. The solution was washers. Only used them on the upper areas, and then installed a new belt. No more squeal!
