Default tyre size

hello all, greeting from Australia, can anyone tell me
what is the biggest tyre size i can put on stock rims for a 79 corvette?
at the moment it has front 225/70-15,rear 215/75-15. I have just taken possession of this car(imported from US) and like everything if you dont see it first, there can be a lot wrong with car, like odd tyres on car, cracked sidewalls and a lot of small gear that is not on/in the car. So i have a lot of gear to buy and get shipped to Aus, any advise on where to purchase gear for this model at reasonable prices will be appreciated.

Any reason why the wider shorter tires on the front? Most people put the wider pattern on the rear.

Unless you are going to race the car, just buy a good set of 255R60-15's for all the wheels. That way you can rotate the tires and get maximum wear out of the whole set.

225/70R15 was probably the size it came from the factory with. 255/60R15 should fit ok (some people report some minor rubbing issues, but this tire size was an option in 79 also). I put some 275/60R15 on my 79 temporarily while we were getting it ready for paint (just needed something road-worthy for short trips, and had these in the shop), but the inner fender lip rubbed on the tire when going over bumps, so I would not advise going that big. (all of the above sizes fit fine on the 15"x8" rims)
