The previous two posts have nailed this issue!!!!!!
I think I can remember that some drag racing enthusiasts were replacing the rubber bushing with a solid aluminum fitting. I never paid much attention to posts about this, except that I was left with the impression that it was not a good idea for street use.
Also there has been some debate in the past as to whether rubber or poly is the best choice (a debate not limited to this part!). I played conservative and went with rubber.
That first photo appears to show that the original mount was 'rebuilt' using some chopped-up thick rubber to replace the original. Maybe it was cut from some old tire.
So, like the Mark of Bubba? We've seen his work before, eh?
I could show you Bubba's handy work all over this car! If you look at my avatar you see the wonderful 10" Cragars SS's with the 50 series tires, this was accomplished by inserting a 3/4"x11/2" galvanized (to prevent rust of course) nipple under the spring, this allowed the tire to hang out 70's style!
Peeking out just at the bottom of the rotor ....
Thanks for the input guys.

Back in the early 90s, when I "went through" the '79 that my wife had at the time, I replaced this bushing with a polyurethane piece, as well as replaced most of the other worn rubber bushings with poly replacements. She drove the car for another 4-5 years without issue, before selling it and buying something else.
