Default Door mirror

I am restoring a 69 and the mirror bracket has rusted screws. It looks like the bracket is not easy to replaced. Has anyone had this problem and what is the solution?

Replacing the plate attatched to the door looks really tough, has to be removed from the inside and access is very limited. I wonder if you can reach up behind and use machine screws with nuts on the back side. I suppose you could always drill out the mounting plate holes and use rivet-nuts(probably should have been done that way from the factory).

Drill out the mounting screws....or leave the bracket and paint around it. With the mirror installed, the bracket does not show.

The previous owner cut a hole in between the two mounting screw holes on my '76. That way you can fenangle the bolt in there (I used a pencil magnet) and bolt it without removing the interior door panel. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure the mirror mounting style was very similar on the early-C3's compared to the mid-C3's.

I have run into this problem many times...and I know how to get the plate out and back in. It requires NO cutting or drilling new holes in the body in any way. NO rubber Well-nuts needed also....you can re-use or make a steel plate just like you take out.

Riv-nuts will not work if you plan on using the fiberglass only. You will run into MORE problems than you may think.....AND YES...I am aware that GM uses the riv-nuts in fiberglass....but they are used in areas that DO NOT have a part that hangs out where leverage (if hit or pulled on) can pull the riv-nut out of the body.

Chrome mirrors and the sport mirrors are completely different in their mounting designs.

Most of the right side doors have mirrors that ARE mounted using Well-nuts. You only have to drill a hole in the fiberglass for the Well-nut. Then you install the Well-nut...from the outside..., install the mount with screws and install the mirror. The mirror on my '71 is mounted that way and I have never had a problem (and I drive it regularly). This is how the dealer installed them, as there were no right-side mirrors installed at the factory until 1975 or so.

PM me so I can give you my shop number. Typing it out takes too long even though the process is not that involved.

YES...I know Well nuts can be used....and for those people have them and are working....LUCKY YOU!!!!....Because I get at least one Corvette in a year where the right mirror got knocked and damaged the door due to the Well nut pulling out and taking fibers with it.

And YES...I see the left mirrors where there are spider/stress cracks due to the mirror being hit also....but the door usually is not destroyed due to the plate behind the panel.

OK we are talking about left side not right.
So here is what I have done so fare. I drilled out the rivets and could get the inside bracket out through the door handle hole. Then I fished the bracket back with a section of wire, and it worked. The next step is to find a new inside bracket because the one I have is rusted. Any idea where I can find one, catalogs do not carry them.
Thanks Chuck

Chuck,

You are doing it the same way I do it. I take it out through the opening that is exposed when you remove the outside door handle.

AS for making one....I make them out of stainless steel plate....and instead of using rivets....I drill and tap the plate...because it is 1/8" to 3/16" thick....so the taper screws hold it to the door...and then the screws that secure the base to the door are also drilled and tapped out.

Getting it back in is not that hard.

Hello, you sent me a email and I made the plate you described to mount my side mirror on my 72. Just cant figure out how to get the plate inside the door. My only guess is to take the outside door handle off and feed a wire though there with the plate. thanks Paul in Ohio

Hi Paul now you are the thinker, that is how it is done. When I did it the door was off the car and I think it was essayer that way however it can be done with door on.
