I went to look at a 72 4 speed today....Car drove solid and the body gaps looked pretty good but I'm afraid it may have some serious hidden rust issues....? I'm looking for opinions....? This car is not listed for sale on the forum and as far as I know the seller is not a member here. I was soo disappointed when I inspected the underside....The interior is in great shape, considering the miles that I think it has....Odometer shows around 45,000 but by the looks of the clutch pedal I think it has 145,000....See the last pic in this post for up close pic of it.
I posted all the pic I took today on my blog for those here that know the URL...If anybody else wants to see the other pics just send me a PM and I will send the link. Yes I did ask about taking pics and the guy was OK with it....Super nice guy that also has a mint 69 that he showed me.
I've seen worse frame rust, but the rust on this frame appears to have progressed past the surface rust stage. Based on the pictures, I'd describe it as rust scale.

Rust scares the heck outta me, my 69 looked really good but had hidden rust some only shown with body off chassis,
You said the seller has a mint 69 so the seller knows this other car is rusty, my remark would be does the price reflect the rust you can see and all the rust you cant see?
He was asking just under 19k for it....To be far I didn't crawl under his 69 but the frame rails as seen under the hood looked mint.... I bet it could be bought for 16,500 but I ain't in the market for a project..... It is supposed to be numbers matching...... I got a pic of the block vin but haven't compared it to the vin... It's mute point for me at this point anyway. He was open to having it inspected and I thought about maybe going that route but the pics tell a different story..... It's hard to really see what condition he frame is in just by looking at it. Glad I took lots of pics.

While I do not believe the car to be "worthless" ( funning from other threads like this )
There are some things like the doors and other areas that really scare me...I think it's fair to know this car will need to be restored.
I would love to hear some comments about a fair value on such a car...not run forrest run...lol....
Hey rvzio,
Would you still have done your car knowing what you now know or passed?

Hey Bats, that's an easy one " HELL NO". There are nice one's out there. To bad I found the forum after the fact.

When I first saw the ad for the car I thought if I could get it for around 16K I would be interested....It doesn't have AC and I knew the paint, after talking to the seller, was at best was low end driver quality....I was OK with that but the rust just kills it for me.....That said I really have no clue if this frame would need to be replaced and if the birdcage is gone.....If both had to be done I'm not sure it would ever be worth the expense or atleast not in the next 20 years....?
I really want to thank all the members that have helped me along the way in my quest to find a nice driver quality 70-72. I have also read a ton of post and it paid off today.

Hang in there it took me like 2 years to find my 69 the biggest thing was fitting into my budget,
My frame had rust nothing like this one but still some holes, my fix was a donor chassis that was rebuilt and I got cheap, I have some pillar rust, hopefully not like Rvzios but needs work, and the bird cage had a rotted out #3,
when the car is a "driver" again it will be new or rebuilt and I will have way less in it than this threads car...so like I say hang in there.
But what happens to a car like in this thread, I think most would agree it needs a restoration, so what price would the car have to sell for to make it worth restoring?
What will become of cars like this one?
I was curious...I sometimes ask myself the same about my 69 but dollar for dollar in my case I would do it over...just barely.
Well Bats I should say I would have passed if I knew what I know. With that said it has become a challenge to me and I will finish and enjoy. Good point

I happen to have that same ecklers clip and inners you do/did.
In my case the only way I can build so cheap is I don't care about stock, I can't imagine that anyone could build a ncrs purist dream on any form of budget...

No you can't. I am in to this one as a base model stock, nothing fancy about it. Now the donor 69 I have I am really considering a resto. I really appreciate both. The stock version money and work. The resto can take a lot of money but I do enjoy the creativity of resto's.

Nobody knows as they are always either walking or running away from them

One thing that may happen is a person who thinks he knows what he's looking at but really doesn't and buys it. I was one of these people. When you start to work on it you run into the while I am at it syndrome. You start fixing things more and more. You get up for the challenge and based on your pocket book you start to find creative ways to bring this car back to life. Used parts, cleaning parts, trading for parts. There are a lot of us out there who make a mistake, admit and fix it. Not easy but doable.

There have been a few on the forums in the past that ended up as parts cars... sad to see a dream go out the door a few pieces at a time. On the other hand, we did that with a 1931 Chevy... bought it to restore, then finally stripped it & sold it off in parts. Made a bunch of money off it, and got the Vette instead! So in our case, it worked out for the better.

We got lucky in buying the Vette.... it was crashed & stripped when we bought it, so we could see EXACTLY what we were getting. The fact that many of the parts were gone was actually a "plus"... most of those would have been replaced anyway.
Hi W,
I guess it really depends what sort of work you're willing to get into with a car as to whether this one is even a possibility.
The doors are certainly rusted and the chassis has an 'odd' extremely consistent 'rust crust' to it. (Almost like it spent some time under water.)
The little bit of the interior that can be seen doesn't look too good either. The door panel for instance has a rather amateurish full length repair to the arm rest.
I think it's the kind of car you should avoid and even $16.5k is WAY too much money for it. It's one thing to unknowingly get involved with a car like this, but to buy it with your eyes open would be pretty foolish.
Good Luck as you continue your search.
Regards,
Alan
A member offered his 70 convertible for sale briefly 2 weeks ago for about #30k. It would take $40k worth of parts and labor to get this car to be even close to what that car is.
