Default 69 Value question

My 69 4 speed, AC, 427/400 original car is a maroon exterior, black top,"soft and hard" black interior. I do not like maroon and love black. So my question is if I paint it black what will it do to the value of the car? 10% hit? more? less?

I'll guess it would drop the value, cost to restore it to original color. Is this car a 'survivor'? If it is, I'd imagine an even larger drop since it will no longer be all original.

Yes I bought it from the original owner who paid cash, so I have the original title showing 0 miles.

Your choice. The color change could hurt in the future. At resale time, about of third of potential buyers will not want the color change; a second third won't care provided they like your black. A final third will not know the car has been repainted and will not know how to read the trim tag.

Excellent points, the real question is how to talk my purest restorer that's helping me that I want triple black.

My point was if the paint is original, any repaint will cancel the value gained from being a 'survivor'. When you ask whether painting it another color will hurt it's resale value, I think it would if we assume the buyers paying top dollar are purists. It's quite possible there may be buyers who would prefer a well done black paint job and wouldn't mind the color change. It's ultimately up to you, what pleases you, if you bought the car primarily for your own enjoyment.

It's your car and if making it black will make you happy, then make it black. But, if value is of any concern then you could potentially lose two ways. One, just by painting an original paint car, you will lose some value as "original" cars (in presentable condition) tend to have higher values than even perfectly restored cars - because there are so few of them. For some cars the value loss can be substantial. Two, changing the color will reduce the value (to some) by the cost to return it to the original color. Good luck with your decision.

Life is way too short to settle, I know there is some stigma about keeping it original so at some time and place in the future it might fetch more $$$...so what?

Yours is an interesting case because while I do mod everything I own I see your car a bit different, but when I ask myself if it were mine would I paint it black...yeah because I sure wouldn't enjoy it wine color..

As far as convincing a shop to change the color, very easy, if the shop is too pompous to do what the paying customer desires the customer finds a down to earth shop who will love to take the $$$ and paint the car what ever the customer wants.

Hi mft,
You should do what ever you want!
In the future, if buyer liked the car but wanted it to be the original color so they can have it judged using originality criteria I generally read that the value of the car is reduced by around $10,000-$12,000.
That's about the cost of a paint job of the caliber that person would want on the car.
Regards,
Alan

Black/Black/Black is a pretty special look!

This 68 is one of my all time favorites!

Does the car still have 100% of its original paint Or has it been resprayed already?

It would be a terrible tragedy to spray over good condition surviving original paint job, in my opinion.

Why not try to find a triple black car and buy it? Might take some time but they're out there.

What I see as a terrible tragedy is settling for something, I hear so many purists sad because they "cant" do this or that to the car to make it what they really want...the thing is they "can" they just are scared to I guess.

Sorry I misunderstood the definition of survivor, the paint was never good as the car had been outside under covers.

I always disliked maroon but bought a 66 in Marlboro maroon which to me has more brown vs purple. Love the color and get many compliments regarding it. If you really love black and plan on keeping the car I would let someone else worry about originality at this point.
